As Mayor of the City of Bamberg, along with City Council, this Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage, dedication, and willingness to lay down their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today can never be repaid, but they must never be forgotten.
This year, we also pay special tribute to two sons of Bamberg, South Carolina, who lost their lives during World War II aboard the USS Muskeget (WAG-48) on September 9, 1942: Charlie Samuel Grimes, Mess Attendant 3rd Class, and Harold Augustus Murray, Seaman 1st Class. These courageous men served honorably aboard the American weather ship when it was attacked and sunk by the German submarine U-755 in the North Atlantic during the height of the war.
Their sacrifice stands as a solemn reminder that even from small towns like Bamberg, ordinary men answered the call to defend liberty in extraordinary times. We honor their memory, their families, and every Gold Star family whose loved ones never returned home.
On this Memorial Day, let us recommit ourselves to preserving the values for which they fought—freedom, unity, sacrifice, and service to others. May we never take lightly the high price that has been paid for this nation.
May God bless the memory of our fallen heroes, bless their families, and bless the United States of America.
