Volunteer opportunities

Sometime when you are out and about in Kerrville, drop by the River Trail G-Street trailhead to take a look at the Guadalupe River restoration project that HCTMN volunteers have been diligently working on since January. The team has adopted a 1,200-foot stretch of river between the concrete trail and the water’s edge, beginning at the footbridge and extending south on the spur towards Schreiner University.

Part of the KUTS Adopt-a-River program, the group has been busy planting native grass seed, cutting and installing live tree stakes, planting and watering container-grown trees, installing tree protection, and placing cedar slash along the riverbank to protect young plantings and help reduce erosion. We have planted over 160 stakes and trees to date.

We have been asked to take a larger role in the river restoration. In the coming weeks, we’ll receive a total of 500 Emory Sedge, Beaked Spikerush, Switchgrass, and Bushy bluestem to plant on our section of the river. We are scheduling a planting day on Monday, June 15; possibly a smaller team on Sunday, June 14 to get the plants distributed to planting locations. Planting may go into Tuesday, June 16 depending on the heat and number of volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jack Davis ([email protected]) or David Drake ([email protected]).

We have a great team and looking forward to new volunteers to support this event.
