🔥DYK? Virginia’s 4 p.m. burning law is in effect until April 30. 🚨

Virginia’s 4 p.m. burning law is in effect until April 30. Note that some localities may have even more restrictive regulations on outdoor burning, so check with your locality before starting any outdoor burning.

🔥 Open-air burning is banned prior to 4 p.m. if the fire is within 300 feet of the woods or dry grass which could carry fire to the woods.

🔥 Burning is allowed between 4 p.m. and midnight as long as the burner takes proper precautions and attends the fire at all times.

Although it is lawful after 4:00 pm to burn, please be cautious on high wind days, as fires can spread out of control quickly. The department was toned at 17:43 on 03/07/26 to a controlled burn that got out of control. This fire was quickly contained, but while crews were packing up we were toned at 18:36 for a second brush fire in the Orchard Street/Slope Street area of North Tazewell. The crews operated for roughly 3 hours and both fires were contained with no damage to nearby structures.
