Last evening Bangor City Council had 2 Ordiances. One presented by Councilor Beck, (restricting or applying various instructions to Bangor PD and other Bangor employees, on any potential interaction with ICE). The other, presented by Councilor Faloon that would prevent the city of Bangor from hiring anyone that worked for any federal immigration authority.
The theme for both ordinances was described to be for public safety and restricting funding and resources to Bangor only. When asked of city officials how much funding goes to anything to do Federal Immigration. The answer was none. The other question was if this would stop ICE from doing what they would do regardless. The answer was no.
While I understand it was an attempt to make our immigrants feel safer, there were other serious questions about enforcement, (Apparently it would be the city manager’s responsibility to enforce these) potential loss of important federal funding, liability, etc.
The State of Maine already has a similar (to Beck’s proposed ordiance) law to be effective around June, and will apply to all towns. It was voted to not move forward with the non hiring of former immigration employees (Faloon’s proposed ordnance). Councilor Beck’s
got forwarded for first reading on Feb 23, than will go to workshop committe the following Monday.
Go to bangormaine.gov, find the adenda to read the ordiances, and watch last night’s workshop discussion for more information.
It’s not too late to weigh in, going to first reading does not mean it passed into effect.
You can come , or zoom in, to publicly comment at 7 pm on the 23rd. Or you can write to [email protected].
Your voice matters.

Monday Feb 9th at 5:15 City Council will discuss an agenda item concerning proposed Ordiances to apply limits and restrictions on Bangor’s involvement with ICE, including restricting hiring anyone that worked for any immigration enforcement agency. The proposed ordiances are posted on the workshop link on the City’s Website bangormaine.com. This subject came up approximately 3 months ago where council decided that state legislative restrictions are already in place and our police department affirmed we have not had issues with ICE. Therefor, we turned down the proposed resolve.
While I understand there are some people that are experiencing fear of ICE, I understand others have fear criminal activity, drug trafficking, human trafficing and child exploitation that is in ICE jurisdictions. This is not a platform for debate, but it is notice for those who have felt they were not giving a chance to weigh in previously. You do now.
If you own property, or a stakeholder or otherwise have in interest in Bangor, you may email your opinion at [email protected]

As always, this post was written from my own perspective and does not speak for, or represent the city or council.

I love Bangor! It’s not perfect but it’s my city and victim of many national and state changes. But a city that still has my heart, passion and loyalty…

Full disclosure. Though we ordered signs to comply with the “ approved and paid for by Carolyn Fish”. Human error resulted in signs not printed as such. So…. We got sticky labels to comply. Tim Reid is my hero. risking his life to support me by putting the labels to comply with the the rules, as we should … but it won’t stop haters to spew hate. However, I carry the shield of faith in human common sense, unification, American fundamentals, fairness, justice and liberty for all. If I am living in an illusion I recognize many in my illusion. Don’t let the haters take away our hope for the betterment of all.
