LifeFlight of Maine

LifeFlight of Maine We are a nonprofit committed to ensuring that everyone, in every community in Maine, has access to critical care and medical transport when needed.

LifeFlight of Maine aircraft, which include three helicopters and one airplane, bring lifesaving equipment and critical care nurses and paramedics to emergency scenes and small, rural hospitals throughout the state. Once stabilized, patients are then transported to one of Maine’s three trauma centers, or the nearest appropriately equipped hospital that is capable of caring for the patient’s indivi

dual needs. LifeFlight’s helicopters, based at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, and the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, cover the entire state of Maine and offshore islands. In addition, LifeFlight operates a King Air turbo-prop plane that can transport patients to specialists as far away as North Carolina, Ohio and Toronto. LifeFlight complements and supports the work of local physicians, mid-level providers, nurses and local emergency medical services (EMS) in caring for the critically ill and injured. All of our aircraft are staffed by teams of highly qualified critical care transport nurses and paramedics. There are typically three ways to request LifeFlight's services:

1. Emergency and specialty physicians can call for LifeFlight whenever they believe a patient needs a critical response, including specialty care, state-of-the-art medical equipment and rapid transport from a community hospital to a medical center with trauma capabilities.

2. Local EMS personnel, guided by supervising emergency physicians and Maine EMS protocols, can call for a helicopter to come directly to an accident scene when the patient needs special care and rapid transport to a trauma center.

3. Community physicians can also call LifeFlight to transport a critically ill or injured patient from a remote location, such as an island or peninsula, to a major medical center. LifeFlight of Maine uses the strictest medical utilization criteria in the country to make sure every flight is medically necessary. Use of LifeFlight is a physician-prescribed critical medical service, organized and managed in the same way hospital emergency departments and physicians provide care to all of the people of Maine. When care is provided, the patient and the patient’s insurance company are billed for the service. Just as Maine’s hospitals provide service to all patients in need of care, LifeFlight services are also provided regardless of a patient’s financial resources or ability to pay. LifeFlight is Maine’s only emergency medical helicopter service and is licensed as a scene response air ambulance allowing a full range of transport services for both interhospital and direct scene support of ground EMS providers. When inclement weather prevents LifeFlight from flying, our highly skilled flight crews are still in action, often headed to community hospitals or accident scenes via ground ambulances provided by Capital Ambulance in Bangor and United Ambulance in Lewiston. LifeFlight is fully accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

We would like to welcome Noah DeKam, who recently joined LifeFlight of Maine as an Assistant Chief Pilot!

In his new role, Noah will work with LifeFight's team of rotor wing pilots.

"I have spent the last decade in the helicopter industry, with a significant portion of that time in air ambulance flying the mighty Agusta 109," says Noah. "Most recently I have worked as an instructor pilot as well as attending Purdue University, graduating with a Masters in Aviation Management."

Noah says he's thrilled to be joining the LifeFlight team.

"LifeFlight is here for every individual and community in Maine, and I am most looking forward to supporting our talented aviation and clinical crews who show up every day ready and willing to answer the call."

Originally from Minnesota, Noah says he's excited to explore all the fishing and boating that Maine has to offer. He's especially looking forward to being near the ocean!

Welcome, Noah!

“For someone up here in Frenchville to have to go all the way to Boston, that's a whole day trip on the ground, versus if they've got an aircraft or helicopter, you're talking hours. And then you've got the care of the LifeFlight crew, which is known to be some of the best, if not the best. In Northern Maine, we're very limited on services. Having LifeFlight is basically a lifeline, especially up here.”
~Matt Derosier, Northern Aroostook Regional Airport Manager

Brad Richard, the manager of the Princeton Regional Airport in Washington County, and Matt Derosier, the manager of the Northern Aroostook Regional Airport Authority in Frenchville, have worked in partnership with LifeFlight of Maine for years. Brad and Matt do not work directly with patients, but they help with dozens of patient transports each year.

This American Life is a nationally renowned radio show and podcast. Hosted by Ira Glass, the show has more than 3 million listeners weekly and tells stories of real people, families, and communities from all across the country. Over the past three decades, it has been a pioneer in long-form audio journalism and storytelling.

On its July 31st episode, it told a story about a woman named Katie Gowell. The story ends with Katie and her baby transported by LifeFlight of Maine.

Katie lives in Patten, Maine, which is up north between Millinocket and Houlton. She was pregnant with her fifth child and decided to have a home birth. Her local family physician was there to assist, but then everything went sideways.

It took extraordinary efforts by her physician, local EMS services, Houlton Regional Hospital, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, and LifeFlight of Maine to ensure that both she and her baby survived.

"When I think about what it took to deliver this one baby," reporter Elaine Appleton Grant says in the story, "this is the thing I've been struck by the most: so many people's instinct to save a life, no matter what."

Listen to her story here:

A doctor trained as a midwife tells the eye-popping story of how she and others came together to save a baby during a birth that suddenly went wrong, in a part of rural Maine where the local labor and delivery unit had closed less than a month before. (26 minutes) Elaine originally learned...
