Did you know?

The City Council has approved adding Broadway Park, Chapin Park and Davenport Park to the City’s listing of historic sites!

Broadway Park and Chapin Park are two of the oldest green spaces in Bangor, with the purpose of providing residents a place of respite. They were set aside as public parks in the 1830s and later redesigned by Boston landscape architect Frank M. Blaisdell.

Davenport Park is the remaining piece of an earlier public square located on Main Street known as Davenport Square. The park also contains the Battleship Maine Monument, which commemorates the USS Maine and other ships that sank during the Spanish-American War, and which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The accompanying postcards are provided courtesy of the Bangor Historical Society and show Broadway Park at upper left, Chapin Park at upper right and lower left, and Davenport Park.

This post is the first in a series that in the coming months will highlight historic sites in Bangor.

The City has new No Parking signs that will be placed in neighborhoods where paving or other road work will be happening – including work scheduled for the week of Aug. 17.

There’s a lot of paving work occurring in the coming weeks across the City, and residents and visitors are asked to keep an eye out for the temporary No Parking signs to know the times and dates when parking restrictions are in place due to paving.

An image of the No Parking signs accompanies this post.

With the amount of road work that’s planned, these signs will be going up and coming down frequently. People should read the signs carefully to know what days road work will be done, and within what hours.

These signs will be visible along several streets the week of Aug. 17 where crews will be doing “chip seal” work, which entails applying a treatment that protects surfaces by sealing and waterproofing the existing pavement. This work is expected to take up to three days to complete, depending on conditions. Crews will be seen in the following neighborhoods off Essex Street in the northern part of the City:

• Walden Parke Way, from Essex Street to the end
• Tamarack Trail, from Walden Parke to the end
• Partridge Lane, from Tamarack Trail to the end
• Carol Court, from Partridge Lane to the end
• Chestnut Trail, from Essex Street to the end
• Fox Hollow Lane, from Essex Street to the end
• Whitetail Way, from Fox Hollow to the end
• Trillium Trail, from Fox Hollow to the end

For the safety of workers, motorists are asked to drive slowly in the areas where work is being done.

Please be aware that another nighttime closure of Broadway at the intersection with Interstate 95 will occur this week to facilitate the ongoing work to replace the I-95 bridge over Broadway.

That portion of Broadway will be closed from 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, to 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14. The closure is necessary to allow equipment on the road that will be used to remove the existing concrete barrier and steel sheets below the bridge.

Vehicles heading northbound on Broadway, away from Downtown, will be redirected onto Stillwater Avenue. They can then get onto I-95 south near the Bangor Mall, and exit onto Broadway just north of the construction zone.

Vehicles traveling south on Broadway will be redirected onto I-95 south. They can exit onto Union Street and travel south toward Downtown, eventually reaching Hammond and then State streets which will take them back to Broadway.

The bridge project is being conducted by the Maine Department of Transportation and the City of Bangor appreciates the patience of motorists, residents and businesses as this important infrastructure project continues.
