Gray's Lily is an endangered plant that an observant hiker may see along Grandfather Mountain State Park's trails. They have a very restricted range and narrow habitat corridor. Unfortunately, the lilies are also a favorite snack of deer and have been heavily impacted by a nonnative blight that targets lilies. These are making an already rare species even more scarce with few reaching maturity to produce seed. If you happen to notice one, take a picture but keep your distance. People are thought to contribute to the blight's spread.

The mission of North Carolina's State Parks are is to promote conservation, recreation and education. Through visiting and enjoying the parks, people gain an appreciation for the protected lands. We want people to enjoy the park and encourage everyone to visit. However, the natural resources found here should not suffer because of it. The trees are not your hatchet and knife targets. This sort of conduct is what causes campsite closures. Please recreate responsibly and report those who do not. This is not acceptable.

With Spring just around the corner, things will start greening up soon. Many of the first plants to sprout and bloom are also some of our most invasive nonnative plants. This early growth and bloom gives them a head start over native species but also makes it easier for land managers to locate and eradicate. If anyone is interested in volunteering to help pull and collect these weedy pests contact Ranger Luke Appling at 828-963-9522 or [email protected].

The Blue Ridge Parkway's access to Grandfather Mountain State Park will be closing soon for maintenance. The following is posted on the Parkway website: Holloway Mountain Rd to US 221 at Beacon Heights will be closed 8am-4pm weekdays from February 28th to April 1, 2022.
Please plan ahead. Anyone planning to camp during these dates should park at the Asutsi Trail on US 221.

Grandfather Mountain State Park is open but still covered in snow and ice.

Please use caution and good judgement if planning to visit the park in the next several days. The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed. The private attraction will likely be closed. The park's trails are already snow and ice covered, prior to the predicted heavy snow event. If the Profile access cannot be opened, do not venture into the park. This is for the safety of the public and staff. Thank you for understanding.

Last week, seasonal staff put up signs along profile trail informing the public not to not cut the switchbacks. The signs were designed in an effort to reduce off trail hiking. Off trail hiking causes soil erosion, water damage and more maintenance for park staff. Let's keep the trails and wildlife in good condition by staying on trail!
