Hidden in Plain Sight

During a recent inspection at the Desert Hills Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility, CHP officers stopped this loaded tractor-trailer and discovered one of the two fifth wheel pivot bracket pins was missing.

The pivot pins retain the fifth wheel head on the tractor, ultimately connecting the trailer to the tractor. With one pin missing, the fifth wheel assembly is no longer properly secured, creating the potential for a catastrophic failure resulting in trailer separation.

Because of the severity of the defect, the vehicle was immediately placed Out of Service and remained out of service until repairs were completed per 49 Code of Federal Regulations, section 393.70(b)(1)(i) - CVSA Out of Service Criteria.

This is a reminder why thorough pre-trip inspections matter. Many of the most dangerous defects aren't obvious until someone takes the time to look closely.

Congratulations to the new parents and outstanding work by Officer Simmons and the San Gorgonio Pass Area - serving the public in ways people don't always see:

On April 28, 2026, at approximately 4:18 PM the CHP San Gorgonio Pass received a call for service regarding a driver who was going into labor and was requesting medical assistance on the Interstate 10 westbound Cherry Valley Boulevard offramp. Upon arriving on scene Officer Simmons was directed to the driver in distress by family members and without delay our officer put on his proper protective equipment and began assisting the driver. At approximately 4:31 PM Officer Simmons helped deliver the baby boy named Sonny on the side of the offramp prior to the Calimesa Fire Department arriving on scene. Mom and Sonny were then transported to the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital where they are doing well.
