The Banning Police Department's first uniformed Police Department was established in 1913. The Banning Police Department consists of 33 sworn personnel and 12 classified personnel. The Police Department offers a variety of services and assignments such as: Field Patrol, Detective Bureau, Emergency Tactical Unit, Narcotics Task Force, Gang Task Force, Narcotics K-9, Motors, School Resource Officer, Field Training Officer, and Reserve Police Officer Program.

On May 21, 2026, at approximately 10:44 p.m., a Banning Police Officer was involved in a traffic collision with a pedestrian in the 1100 block of W. Ramsey Street.

The California Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the scene and has assumed responsibility for the investigation.

All media inquiries and requests for information regarding this investigation will be handled by the California Highway Patrol San Gorgonio Pass Area Office.

Banning, Calif. - On August 1, 2025, 6 drivers were arrested and 25 drivers were cited for various driver’s license violations at a DUI/License Checkpoint in the City of Banning.

The DUI checkpoint was held in the 4500 block of W. Ramsey Street from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

25 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license. 816 vehicles were contacted at the checkpoint. Officers arrested 6 drivers for the following charges: driving under the influence (1 arrested), driving with a license suspended for a prior DUI (2 arrested), felony warrants (2 arrested), and misdemeanor warrants (1 arrested).

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.

The next DUI checkpoint will be held in the coming months, with an exact date and location to be determined.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The use, sale, or possession of fireworks is strictly prohibited in the City of Banning. Violators will be subject to enforcement under: City of Banning Municipal Code Chapter 8.20 – Fireworks. Health & Safety Code §§ 12677 & 12700
