Ornithology is the study of birds and bird biology. Why study Birds? Because most birds are diurnal, they are one of the most accessible forms of life on Earth. They have excited and inspire humans for countless generations. With the recent explosion of interest in our avian earth mates, this course will introduced students to the diversity of birds using scientific literature and field observation. One day in the classroom and another in the field each week should help students gain deeper understanding of birds through study that will include taxonomy and classification, avian diversity, behavior, ecology, evolution, physiology, and conservation. Students should have a deeper appreciation about the diversity of birds of the world and understand how birds are classified, learn how birds evolved, recognize some of the ways that birds are physically capable of flight, how they communicate, find food, and attract mates. One day a week, students will be in the field working on winter ecology and bird identification.
