Yesterday the YCC crew did some amazing work pulling invasives! We worked with Emma, the NRD Invasive Species Specialist, to pull purple loosestrife and crown vetch in the Ottawa National Forest. We also put in a lot of work helping to eradicate the spotted knapweed along First Sands beach/Pequaming Road. It was a great way to promote the success of the native habitat!

Eagle Rock Visit

08/01/2024

Today we visited Eagle Rock in Big Bay to learn about the tribal history of the area and to conduct a blueberry study for the Community Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP) . We would like to thank Karina Schmidt from the NRD for sharing her knowledge of plants, Erika Vye for sharing her knowledge of the geography of the area, Emily Shaw from the NRD for sharing her knowledge of using berries to detect heavy metals and finally to Zena Huhta from the NRD for sharing her feelings about the loss of this sacred place to her people. It was a good talk and everyone was open to express their viewpoints. The youth were quiet and I hope they will reflect on today's teachings.

Tuesday, July 30th, the YCC crew attended canoe training at Courtney Lake! We learned about canoe safety, proper canoe handling, and practiced how to get back into your canoe after tipping over. It was a great day learning and having fun at the lake with KBIC NRD staff. Thank you to our instructor, GLIFWC warden Lt. Steve Amsler for the lesson!

The youth participated in the KBIC Water Walk inspired by Josephine Mandamin’s first water walk across Turtle Island.

Josephine was an Anishinaabe First Nations grandmother who began the movement, walking more than 10,000 miles in total for the healing of the water.

The Water Walk was approximately 17 miles and began at First Sands Beach in Pequaming and continued around the Bay to Sand Point in Baraga.

So proud of our crew, who walked nearly the entire 17 miles!! It was a beautiful day, and we were in awe to see the eagles that followed us during the whole journey. Kydan even led the walk during the final stretch by carrying the eagle staff!

This Tuesday the crew spent time at the community garden doing some weeding and berry harvesting. They also put the finishing touches on a bench which will be gifted to one of the community garden members, so he can have a place to comfortably sit while visiting his garden! It was built by the NRD youth workers, and our crew sanded and stained the bench. It turned out beautifully!
On Wednesday we attended a STEM workshop, and learned about fisheries, astronomy, and robotics from professionals!

Today we walked 5 1/2 miles for the Healing Circle Run organized by the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC).

The Healing Circle Run is a prayer for healing. It is an opportunity to pray for healing for ourselves, our families, our communities, our nation, Aki and all our relatives. This 7-day run connects 10 tribal nations throughout the Ojibwe Ceded Territory. J

Healing begins with the individual.

As a person heals,
they can help their family to heal.
As families heal,
they can help their communities to heal.
As communities heal,
they can help their nations to heal.

As individuals, families
Communities, and nations heal,
they can help
Aki and our plant and animal relatives to heal.
