Took some NPS seasonal and intern staff on a historical tour of Keweenaw County yesterday. Cliff Mine (the blow downs were wild there), Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor, and points between. We discussed early mining technology, transportation, tourism, and heritage, while visiting a few Heritage Sites as well: Keweenaw County Historical Society, Fort Wilkins, and Delaware Mine.

Too bad I can never remember to take enough good pics of what we’re doing/seeing. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The Advisory Commission is happy to announce the recipients of this year’s Keweenaw Heritage Grants. These grants have been awarded annually since 2008, and have contributed over $2.3 million to the local economy.

This year, thirteen applicants were awarded a total of nearly $150,000 for fourteen projects related to historic preservation, interpretation, education, collections management, and org development. Many of these projects are either begun or set to begin this summer, so be on the look out for improvements to the historic resources of the Keweenaw and the visitor experiences on offer.

It’s that time of year in the Keweenaw. 300-plus inches of snow means swollen rivers and impressive waterfalls in April and May. The Eagle River Falls was incredible this weekend.

Once home to a fuse factory, the river’s wooden crib dam that held back water for power the factory’s machinery is just visible today. Once the water levels drop, the dam is easier to see.

Begun in 1862 and operating for nearly a century before fire destroyed it in 1957, the factory’s water-powered machinery produced millions of feet of fuse wire necessary for blasting rock underground to free native copper. Just one more piece of the Keweenaw’s industrial past one can visit and learn about here.
