Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum

Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum An authentic restored Finnish homestead in Upper Michigan dating from the early 1900's. This Homestead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum is located on its original site in Askel, Michigan. This homestead was initiated in 1896 by the Herman and Mina Hanka Finnish immigrant family. This restored ten-building 40-acre outdoor museum provides a window for visitors to observe how immigrant families faced with setbacks and minimal resources could survive and thrive by using their skills and knowledge in

Michigan's Upper Peninsula wildness. Its visitors experience how the Homestead Act of 1862 benefited immigrants, including many Finns. The Hanka Family's story also demonstrates that Homesteads benefited copper miners who were injured on the job. The homestead (abandoned in the 1960s) was discovered and restored in the 1980s under the leadership of Superior Restorations and its president Alan Pape, who established an all-volunteer organization. He restored this “diamond in the rough” to inform future generations about life and living conditions in the 1920s. This museum opened to the public in 1985 and is a cooperating Heritage Site of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. In addition, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This Homestead is one of the few historical sites in the state that has been restored toitse original location with many of its original artifacts. The museum is owned and operated by the all-volunteer Hanka Homestead Association.

Copper Country is unique because its counties have the USA's greatest concentration of residents with Finnish ethnic roots, which explains why the City of Hancock was selected as the 2026 Finno-Ugric Capital. Finlandia Foundation has been working with Copper Country Finns and Friends to celebrate Finnish American heritage and Finno-Ugric cultural roots, including this year's Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration from June 18 to 21.
