⚠️ A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Currituck County until 10 PM tonight, September 5th. Scattered storms may produce damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, isolated hail up to ping pong ball size, and frequent lightning.

Please note: US National Weather Service Wakefield VA is reporting that due to a nationwide product dissemination issue, the watch notification may be delayed through some alerting systems.

⚠️Stay weather aware this afternoon and evening and have multiple ways to receive warnings if they are issued.

Scattered storms are expected this afternoon into this evening across most of the area. The greatest threat for severe storms is along and south of I-64. Damaging winds are the primary threat. However, isolated large hail and localized flooding are also possible.

September 4th, 3 PM update: An additional Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for our NE North Carolina counties due to thunderstorms starting to develop along a boundary near the VA/NC border. Again, please remain weather-aware today and have ways to receive warnings!

MAINLAND WATER MAIN REPAIR COMPLETE
Repairs to the water main break have been completed and water service has been restoredThe Boil Water Advisory remains in effect until 6:00 PM on Saturday, September 5. Customers within the affected area should continue to boil all water used for human consumption, including drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice and washing hands, or use bottled water. Thank you for your patience while crews worked to complete these repairs.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY
Water consumers on the Currituck County Mainland Water System from Currituck Trading Post (3581 Caratoke Highway) south to the Wright Memorial Bridge (9175 Caratoke Highway) are under a boil water advisory. The Currituck County Water Department advises consumers to boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, and washing hands) or use bottled water. Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.
This advisory remains in effect until 6:00pm on September 5, 2026

MAPLE ROAD CLOSURE
Maple Road is currently closed from the Currituck County Water Department (444 Maple Road) to Shortcut Road while crews continue working to repair the water main break. Motorists should avoid the area and use an alternate route. The road will remain closed while repairs are underway. Additional updates will be shared as they become available.

⚠️Update 8:55am 09/03/2026
MAINLAND WATER SERVICE INTERRUPTION
Water consumers on the Currituck County Mainland Water System from Currituck Trading Post (3581 Caratoke Highway) south to the Wright Memorial Bridge, could experience an interruption in water service due to a leak repair resulting from a water main break.
County staff are currently working to repair the leak and restore the distribution system. Every effort is being made to keep any interruption in service to a minimum. We appreciate your patience and understanding while our crews work to complete the necessary repairs.

Currituck County Mainland Water customers in the Barco, Waterlily, Maple and Shawboro areas may experience low water pressure due to a water main break on Maple Road. Crews are currently working to make repairs and restore normal water pressure. There is no boil water advisory at this time. Additional updates will be shared as they become available.

Temperatures start to climb into the 90s today, starting a streak of hot weather. Isolated thunderstorms are possible today and tomorrow in the afternoon and evening. While storms coverage is expected to be low, storms may be strong to severe tomorrow.

Showers and storms this afternoon/evening could produce heavy downpours. There is a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall for portions of SE VA into NE NC with a Marginal Risk elsewhere. Scattered instances of flash flooding will be possible and are most likely to occur in flood prone, poor drainage, or urban areas.

Periods of heavy rainfall are forecast late this evening into tonight, with scattered instances of flash flooding possible. A Slight Risk (level 2/4) Excessive Rainfall Outlook is in place for today/tonight across much of the area. A few areas could see 1-2” of rain in an hour or two, which could result in flash flooding. Additionally, a few storms near or south of the VA/NC border may become strong to severe with damaging wind gusts and large hail as the main threats.
