More Nelson County Children Await Court-Appointed Advocates as CASA Seeks Volunteers
NELSON COUNTY, Ky. — More children in Nelson County who have experienced abuse or neglect are waiting to be matched with a court-appointed advocate, according to CASA of the Lincoln Trail.
The organization, which serves Nelson, Hardin, LaRue, Marion and Green counties, reports it currently has a waitlist for children needing advocates in every county it serves except Green County. Last year alone, more than 300 children across the five-county region entered the court system as a result of abuse or neglect.
CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, recruits and trains community volunteers to serve as the voice of children involved in abuse and neglect cases. Advocates work alongside the court system, gathering information and making recommendations that help judges determine what is in the child's best interest.
To help meet the growing demand, CASA of the Lincoln Trail will begin a new volunteer training class in early September. The organization is encouraging Nelson County residents to consider becoming a CASA volunteer to help reduce the local waitlist and ensure more children have an advocate by their side throughout the court process.
Officials say volunteers play a critical role in helping provide stability, consistency and support for children facing difficult circumstances while their cases move through the legal system. Those interested in becoming a CASA volunteer are encouraged to contact CASA of the Lincoln Trail for more information about the upcoming training program.
