🩺 Real Patients. Real Scenarios. Real-World CCMA Skills.

Today, our CCMA students took their Patient Interview skills to the next level with LIVE patient volunteers! 👏

Some patients were friendly and easy to interview. Others were a little more challenging… and a few truly made our students work for it! 😂

Our amazing patient volunteers came prepared, creating detailed backstories and alternate personas for their roles in today’s skill check-off. This gave our students a first-hand opportunity to practice the skills they’ll need every day in the healthcare setting, including:

🗣️ Conducting effective patient interviews

🧘‍♀️ De-escalating challenging patient interactions

🧠 Communicating with patients experiencing mental health challenges

👀 Maintaining professional facial expressions and body language

🤝 Practicing empathy, professionalism, and nonjudgmental communication

🔐 Learning how to respond appropriately when patients share deeply personal or unexpected information

And yes… some of those stories definitely tested our students’ ability to keep a straight face! 😳😂

These experiences are about so much more than checking off a skill. They’re about preparing our future medical assistants for the real people, real emotions, and real-life situations they will encounter in healthcare.

We are so proud of the way our students stepped outside their comfort zones, adapted to each unique patient, and continued to demonstrate professionalism throughout the experience!

Great job, future CCMAs! You’re learning that sometimes the most valuable clinical lessons happen when things don’t go exactly as planned. ❤️🩺

Also, a HUGE THANK YOU to our volunteer patients from Nelson County Schools & CommonSpirit Bardstown!

🚧🏗️ BUILDUP’S IN THE HOUSE! 🏗️🚧

This week, the UP Center is proudly represented on the national stage as Treavon Laning travels to Atlanta, Georgia to compete at the SkillsUSA 2026 National Leadership & Skills Conference!

After earning his spot at the state level, Treavon is now competing against the very best in the country. In their event, only one competitor from each state advances to nationals—meaning they’ll be competing alongside just 27 of the top competitors from across the nation.

💥 Tomorrow and Thursday, he will put his skills, precision, problem-solving, and professionalism to the test on the biggest stage in career and technical education.

We couldn’t be more proud of the hard work, dedication, and determination that brought him here.

Let’s show Treavon some support as he represents the BuildUP Program, the UP Center, Nelson County, and Kentucky!

Good luck, Treavon! We’re cheering you on from home and can’t wait to see what you accomplish!

Our second-year Health Collaboration students were honored to volunteer at Active Day this week, where they were able to further develop essential healthcare skills through meaningful, hands-on experiences in a real-world setting. Opportunities like this allow students to bridge classroom learning with practical application while building professionalism, compassion, and confidence in the field of healthcare.

We are deeply grateful for the support of our valued community partners, whose collaboration helps provide these impactful learning experiences. Their investment in our students plays a vital role in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals and strengthening the connection between education and community service.

Our team at the UP Center are immensely grateful to CHI Saint Joseph Health - Flaget Memorial Hospital & Foundation for hosting our second group of Healthcare Certification students for their shadow experience!

Students had the opportunity to explore a wide range of specialties, including OB, ICU, Med Surg, PT, Ortho, Lab, Pharmacy, and the Cancer Center. These hands-on experiences are invaluable as they help students discover their passions and see the impact of healthcare careers firsthand.

Amazing opportunities in amazing places—made possible by amazing people who are willing to say YES to our students.

Thank you for investing in the future of healthcare!
