The air quality is forecast to be even worse today than yesterday. It won't be as hot but the ozone is higher today, on top of the smoke. The dots on this EPA map represent reporting stations. Red is unhealthy for sensitive groups (including the old and the young); purple is unhealthy for EVERYONE, and is headed our way.

When the AQI (air quality index) goes above 200 (and it's 197 right now), even healthy people can have trouble breathing after a FEW MINUTES outside. Please take care and consider staying indoors today, hard as it is when you're on the island...

Mark your calendars for the 20th annual LBI Artist Studio Tour, Saturday and Sunday, August 8th and 9th, from 10 am to 4 pm each day.

More than thirty LBI-based artists and galleries will be sharing and selling their art up and down the island. Joining the tour for the first time this year is our own Jon Fiorella. Jon is the talented artist who creates the beautiful driftwood paintings and burnt wood boxes, magnets and ornaments sold in our gift shop. Jon is a part-time resident of Barnegat Light who donates his work to the Friends. Over the years this has amounted to a very considerable sum, and we are so grateful to Jon for his generosity.

Jon will be demonstrating his artistic techniques and will also have a wide variety of his creations available for sale at the visitors center in the park. We hope to see you then!

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to push air quality into the red "unhealthy" zone today all over Jersey and Philly. As of 7 am the air is already unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children and older adults. By this afternoon, it will be unhealthy for everyone. Not a great day to be outdoors, unfortunately.

UPDATE: As of 10 am, the Air Quality Index is 142 and climbing. 150 is UNHEALTHY FOR EVERYBODY. That means even perfectly healthy people can have difficulty breathing outside today and tomorrow. Please take care!

Are you ready for a VERY hot day? We're maxing out at about "feels like" 104 on the island, 109 on the mainland. Shade, water and air conditioning are your friends. The ocean is a lovely 73 degrees! The maritime trail in the park offers some cool respite from the temps.

Say hello to the 2026 Barnegat Light Beach Patrol! This weekend these hardworking young people were celebrated at the 5th annual Burgers and Blessings event, organized by the two churches in town--St Peters at the Light (1890) and Zion Lutheran Church LBI (1940).

Let's all be grateful for this talented and dedicated crew, and the others on LBI, who keep our beloved beaches safe, clean and fun. Photo Barnegat Light Beach Patrol.
