Five years ago, the Barnegat Historical Society was in danger of folding. Its membership was aging out, and it was desperate for some new blood. After an intensive membership drive, the group got its wishes with new members and is flourishing today. Grove Conrad, one of the new members at the time,....

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, the Barnegat Historical Society presented the 3rd installment in its 2026 Speaker Series. The presentation of “New Jersey Art and Artists of the Revolution” was given at Barnegat’s iconic Cedar Bridge Tavern County Historic Site by noted artist and educator Barbara Alice Moir, M.Ed.
After a few, or maybe more, introductory words from BHS Trustee, Grove Conrad, Ms. Moir delivered an informative and entertaining presentation to an SRO crowd, highlighting events of the American Revolution and their relationship to the art and artists of that time. Ms. Moir’s presentation was especially relevant during this year’s celebration of the United States of America’s 250th Birthday!

The latest edition of the “Barnegat Leader” features a story about our dear friend and loyal BHS Member, Giovanni Rawley. Giovanni is the founder of the popular and informative page, “Ole’ Tales of Barnegat.” That being said, here is a copy that article, we believe that you will be quite impressed with this young man’s enthusiasm for history and more specifically the rich history of Barnegat Township (nee Union Township.)

Its not too early to make plans to attend the Barnegat Historical Society’s 2nd Presentation in its 2026 Speaker Series. As lovers of history, we of course, enjoy visiting historic site, buildings, and the like. But what would history be like without an understanding of the actual people who made that history. As it’s topic, this presentation will look at the life and times of one of Barnegat Township’s more iconic residents, Rolf Mills Collins. Captain Collins was born on Monday, August 8, 1836 and died on Sunday, October 22, 1922 at the grand old age of 86.

Captain Collins’ exciting and productive life has become an indelible part of Barnegat Township’s rich history. Ms. Diane Chapman-Lada will bring Rolf back to life with a recounting of his life’s story. If you are truly interested in the history of Barnegat, and the actual people who are an integral part of that history, this is a presentation not to be missed.

Ms. Chapman-Lada’s presentation will be given on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 2:30 to 3:30 PM at the Cloverdale Farm County Park in, of course Barnegat.

The venue for this presentation, Cloverdale Farm County Park, is significant in itself, in that the ubiquitous cranberry was actually harvested at this historic site.
