The population in this "one horse town", as it were, is roughly 3,082 and the school districts serving the area are Mahanoy Area, Marion Catholic and Tamaqua Area. The 24.171 sq mi makes up farm land, means to travel, small business and residential areas. Sections of The Valley include Hosensock, Park Crest, Grier City, Lakeside, Lakewood and Locust Valley. Tuscarora Lake & Locust Lake State Parks
, Catalpa Grove/Lakewood Park Campground and several small rivers & ‘cricks’ make up the village's 0.365 sq mi of water. Truly rich in culture and history, Barnesville is home to Lakeside and Lakewood Parks. Lakeside Park, open between 1880-1960s was greatly know for its beautiful warm picnics and ice skating in NEPA's winter months. Lakewood Park, a mere mile away from Lakeside, was open from 1916 to 1984. It is best know for it's grand dance hall and heritage festivals, as well as welcoming guests such as Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Dick Clark to perform there. It may have indeed trumped Lakeside Park with its roller coasters and famous performers, but Lakeside Park kept the memory and thrill alive for all in Barnesville, as The Lakeside Ballroom is still a great form of entertainment today in 2013. While our amusement parks have vanished over the last few centuries, Locust Lake & Tuscarora State Parks and Catalpa Grove/Lakewood Park Campground provide activities like hiking & camping, swimming, kayaking/boating and fishing and learning about the beautiful environment that surrounds in The Valley.
