Operation Round Up at work in Lamar County!

Congratulations to the City of Barnesville Fire Department, recipient of a $4,756 Operation Round Up grant toward the purchase of specialized rescue equipment.

Operation Round Up turns a little change into a lot of good. Participating Southern Rivers Energy members voluntarily round their monthly electric bill up to the next whole dollar, and those pennies are combined to support organizations making a difference in the communities we serve.

Small change. Big impact. Right here at home.

🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day—but when damaged, misused, or improperly charged, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

• Use the correct battery and charging cord for your device.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Never charge devices under your pillow, on your bed, or on a couch.
• Keep batteries away from anything that can catch fire.
• Stop using a battery if you notice swelling, leaking, unusual heat, odors, or strange noises.

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Barnesville Fire Department.

Since the department first transitioned to full-time paid staffing, our four full-time firefighters have worked 12-hour shifts rather than the traditional 24/48-hour shift. While that system served the department for many years, it also contributed to challenges with recruitment and employee retention.

One of the late Fire Chief Steve Andrews' greatest hopes for the Barnesville Fire Department was to one day see firefighters working a 24-hour shift schedule. We are proud to honor that vision today.

Over the years, research and experience have shown that a 24/72-hour schedule offers significant benefits for firefighters and the communities they serve. Compared to a traditional 24/48-hour schedule, firefighters work an average of 42 hours per week instead of 56 hours per week. This schedule promotes better physical and mental well-being, reduces fatigue, and helps ensure firefighters are better prepared to respond when our community needs them most.

Today, the Barnesville Fire Department officially begins operating on a 24/72-hour shift schedule.

We would like to thank the City of Barnesville for recognizing the value of this change and for supporting a decision that strengthens our department. By embracing this progressive approach, the City of Barnesville is setting a precedent for other departments and municipalities by demonstrating that investing in firefighter health and well-being ultimately leads to better service for the community. This decision reflects a commitment to innovation, public safety, and the future of the fire service.
