Take Back Day is a free event for communities nationwide to properly dispose of old and unneeded medications safely and anonymously. This Saturday, Saturday, April 27, from 10am-2pm bring those old and unneeded medications to your nearest collection site. Find your site at the link here https://loom.ly/0B2qr8I

Don't let your meds turn Cape Cod's drinking water into a pharmacy! Flushing them down the toilet or tossing them in the trash might seem easy, but it's a recipe for dicey drinking water. Keep our environment and drinking water clean by disposing of your meds the right way. Let's keep our sips safe and our Cape Cod pristine!

Let's dive into science on a rainy Friday, because even storm clouds can't dampen our curiosity! Did you know that right here in our little slice of paradise, we've got some serious brainpower at work? Yep, Cape Cod is like a science mecca, with research projects ranging from to unraveling the secrets of shellfish to tackling the mysterious dangers lurking under our kitchen sinks.

Check out this conversation with WCAI-FM about the perks of having world-class scientists and researchers nearby and how they help our local environment and communities. Plus, hear from specialists, including staff from Extension's Hazardous Materials program, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant Fisheries and Aquaculture program, who are pitching in by volunteering on local town boards.

(Turn around)
Every now and then we face hazards unseen,
Collections keep our homes safe and clean,
(Turn around)
Every now and then we feel the strain,
But our efforts ensure clean water will remain,
(Turn around)
Every now and then we may feel a little scared,
Collections keep us prepared and aware.
(Turn around)
Every now and then we're terrified, it's a start,
But with clean water flowing, we're never torn apart.

Once upon a time, hazards hid from our sight,
But now with collections, we see the light,
Keeping families safe, from dangers we start,
Preventing a total eclipse of the heart.

Several Cape Cod households have faced emergencies due to mercury spills from old, wall-mounted thermostats. Did you know these thermostats can contain up to 3 grams of mercury each? Just 1 gram of mercury can contaminate a 20-acre lake or pond, and 3 grams could affect a pond like Scargo Lake in Dennis.
πŸ’§ Safely dispose of your old thermostats at our Cape Cod Household Hazardous Waste Collections to prevent mercury pollution and ensure the safety of your family, our first responders, and Cape Cod. Find your local collection schedule and brochure at www.loveyourlocalwater.org.

This Sunday we're springing forward, which means we'll all emerge from our beds like a grumpy bear coming out of hibernation. However, if you want to get out of the Sunday sleepies, we have some ideas for you:
β˜•Spring is in the air, as is the smell of a thousand pots of morning coffee. If composting is on your 2024 bucket list, those coffee grounds can be a great start to a compost bin.
🏠While nobody enjoys being grumpy from lack of sleep, if you find yourself in that situation, consider spending some time alone in your garage, basement, or shed. Conduct a brief audit of unwanted toxic household products that you can dispose of at our upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collections. If you're unsure about what products you can drop off at these collections, download your town's brochure at www.loveyourlocalwater.org to find out what is accepted or not accepted.
πŸ₯ΎShake off the sleep with a hike! With all this extra daylight, enjoy the outdoors but remember to protect yourself from tick bites. Wear Permethrin treated clothing/footwear. You can find Permethrin at most major garden centers on the Cape.

Happy Leap Day! Take advantage of this extra day by beginning to declutter your garage, shed, under-the-sink, or dusty basement shelves. Look for unwanted and unused household hazardous chemicals such as cleaners, pesticides, or oil paints, as our Household Hazardous Waste Collections kicks off in April. Brochures will be in your local town hall in a few weeks, but you can download your own brochure today at our website www.loveyourlocalwater.org. Small business waste accepted!

Ok, we saw snowdrops, so - signs of spring! What else is a sign? Hazardous waste season is starting! Latex isn't hazardous, it can be recycled. A cape-wide paint collection is scheduled for 2024.
Stay tuned for hazardous waste days soon to be posted!

If you spend this time of year prepping your car before a winter road trip, or cleaning out your boat before the summer season starts, you may come across expired flares. Flares CANNOT be placed in your trash bin as they can contaminate your drinking water with chemicals that are dangerous. They can only be disposed of safely at Marine and Road Flare Collection locations throughout Cape Cod. Follow the link here for a brochure on disposal info and locations www.capecod.gov/disposal.
