Another full house to hear Deborah Swiss discuss The Tin Ticket, the fascinating and heartbreaking story of the founding mothers of Australia, the transport of women convicts from Newcastle to Tasmania. We were also delighted by Digney Fignus singing “All For Love” an original song he wrote to honor the women in the Tin Ticket.

Mark MCGrath will speak at Tales about his adventures and observations as a trekker. He and his wife retired to the Cape seeking an active lifestyle. They took a walk to rehab a new hip. Then took another. Soon they had walked the entire perimeter of Cape Cod on the beach, sleeping in dune shacks and on island beaches. They discovered places of history loved by artists and writers. $10 members; $15 nonmembers. Dessert reception to follow.

Monday September 12th at 7 pm ~ TALES OF CAPE COD presents perennial favorite author and story teller MARTY SANDLER as he tells the dramatic story of the 1941 baseball season. This was BASEBALL'S FINEST HOUR ~ the year that Ted Williams hit .406 with the RED SOX and Joe D'Maggio hit in 56 straight games. It was the year when the most remarkable moment in World Series history occurred when Mickey Owen dropped the third strike. All of this and more occurred during the back drop of the world preparing for war and segregation which kept out many talented players because of the color of their skin.

CAPE COD MODERN HOUSES-Midcentury Architecture and Community on the Outer Cape with Founding Director and Architect Peter McMahon.
This program explores the personalities and motivations of some of the prime movers of modern architecture who were drawn to the Outer Cape's isolation and stark beauty beginning in the 1930s. A vibrant community was created. Some of the houses were eventually abandoned and are owned by the National Park Service. Cape Cod Modern House Trust has worked to revive and reimagine this legacy.

Helltown: The Untold Story of Serial Murder on Cape Cod (on sale 7/12/22) by New York Times, USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestselling author & renowned investigative journalist Casey Sherman tells the shocking true story of literary legends Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and Norman Mailer and their dueling obsession with the investigation of charismatic hippie turned notorious Cape Cod serial killer Tony Costa, who murdered and dismembered at least four women in the late 1960’s and buried them in the woods next to an ancient cemetery near picturesque Provincetown, Massachusetts. Sherman takes the reader into the Heart of Darkness that can be found behind the beautiful facade of one of the world’s most romantic vacation destinations to reveal one of the most terrifying serial murder cases in the history of American crime, and a Hitchockian style killer at the center of it all, who is like nothing we have seen since Jack the Ripper.

“Helltown” is an immersive and captivating journey into the mind of a serial killer. - Associated Press

"Master storyteller Casey Sherman takes us back in time to the 1960s and into the dark mind of a charismatic serial killer. Set against the idyllic backdrop of Cape Cod, Helltown is a riveting, often spine-tingling true crime story." — Terence Winter, Executive Producer of The Sopranos, creator of Boardwalk Empire

"Searing and important, Helltown is an immaculately researched and rivetingly propulsive chronicle illustrating a pivotal part of our history. Brilliantly weaving together true crime, a grotesque criminal, the political landscape and the brilliant minds who wrote about it – – Casey Sherman is a master at bringing history alive. Compelling, complex, and revealing--do not miss this!" - Hank Phillippi, USA Today Bestselling Author of HER PERFECT LIFE

"With Helltown, Casey Sherman delivers the kind of true crime that keeps eyes glued to the pages -- smart, impeccably researched, and utterly absorbing. Destined to be on all the year-end best nonfiction lists, this is an unqualified triumph by a writer at the top of his game!" Gregg Olsen, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of If You Tell

Helltown chronicles the terrifying prelude to the Manson murders and the rivalry between two legendary writers at different stages of their storied careers and their quest to be the first to get the killer's macabre story. Vonnegut Jr., who lived on Cape Cod at the time, corresponded with Costa while the killer was in prison and wrote about the case for LIFE Magazine. Mailer, who lived in Provincetown, wrote a fictionalized account of the Costa murders in his 1984 thriller, Tough Guys Don’t Dance, which was adapted into a film in 1987.

While pursuing their stories about serial killer Tony Costa, both literary icons are forced to confront the darkness within themselves. Sherman based his research for Helltown on thousands of newly uncovered investigative documents from the shocking murder case, hours of audiotaped interviews with the killer, disturbing crime scene photos and the murderer’s own never published manuscript. For the first time, Sherman also explores the possible connection between these heinous murders and the infamous slaying of the Lady of the Dunes, which has gone unsolved since 1974.

Before Charles Manson, there was Tony Costa―the serial killer of Cape Cod

1969: The hippie scene is vibrant in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Long-haired teenagers roam the streets, strumming guitars and preaching about peace and love... and Tony Costa is at the center of it all. To a certain group of smitten young women, he is known as Sire―the leader of their counter-culture movement, the charming man who speaks eloquently and hands out hallucinogenic drugs like candy. But beneath his benign persona lies a twisted and uncontrollable rage that threatens to break loose at any moment. Tony Costa is the most dangerous man on Cape Cod, and no one who crosses his path is safe.

When young women begin to disappear, Costa's natural charisma and good looks initially protect him from suspicion. But as the bodies are discovered, the police close in on him as the key suspect. Meanwhile, local writers Kurt Vonnegut and Norman Mailer are locked in a desperate race to secure their legacies as great literary icons―and they both set their sights on Tony Costa and the drug-soaked hippie culture that he embodies as their next promising subject, launching independent investigations that stoke the competitive fires between two of the greatest American writers.

Immersive, unflinching, and shocking, Helltown is a landmark true crime narrative that transports us back to the turbulent late 1960s, reveals the secrets of a notorious serial killer, and unspools the threads connecting Costa, Vonnegut, and Mailer in the seaside city that played host to horrors unlike any ever seen before. New York Times bestselling author Casey Sherman has crafted a stunner.
