Effective immediately, the entire Barrackville Police Department has been relieved of duty by the Mayor and City Council.

We are sincerely grateful for the support, trust, and encouragement shown to us by the Barrackville community throughout our service. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve and protect this town.

We thank the citizens of Barrackville for allowing us the opportunity to serve, and we wish the community continued safety and the very best in the future.

The Barrackville Police Department announces that Chief Freeburn has resigned from his position, effective immediately.

Until further notice, Sergeant Hunt will serve as the officer in charge of the Barrackville Police Department to ensure the continued operation of the department.

If you have any questions regarding this transition, they may be addressed in person during the next Barrackville Town Council meeting.

We appreciate the community’s continued support and cooperation during this transition.

Tomorrow is the Bridge Day Festival! If driving to the event or past it, please keep in mind there will be heavier pedestrian traffic than normal. There is also running events starting around 7:30am. To ensure the safety of the Festival and all attending, Barrackville Police Officers will be out early and throughout the entire day conducting patrols and traffic enforcement in the event area. There will also be other volunteers helping at the various locations as well. We hope everyone has a great and safe time at this wonderful event!

The Barrackville Police Department is pleased to announce the start of our Vacation House Watch Program. There are forms in the Town Hall for citizens to fill out the requested information and the Police Clerk or Sewer Clerk will collect them and provide them to the Department. This program will be for citizens within the Town Limits of Barrackville for officers to check residences during travel or other prolonged absences. Officers always conduct patrols of the Town but this gives us an emergency contact number and a list of persons allowed on property should anything happen. Officers will only enter residences in emergency situations where it is necessary for either potential criminal activity or to ensure the property is secured if it is found to be unsecure.

Additionally, for some checks, Officers will be leaving business cards showing the officer that checked, as well as date and time of the check, so residents do know it was checked on. If you are a resident or business in Barrackville and see a new card somewhere, it is from the Barrackville Police Department.

Barrackville PD May 2026 Report

In May, the Department responded to 203 calls for service. Included in those was numerous area patrols, school zone details school checks and requested speed enforcements. Officers also conducted 33 traffic stops, which resulted in 19 citations, 3 of which for school zone speeding, and one arrest.

Officers have also conducted firearm qualifications and the Chief attended a training held by the WV Law Enforcement Professional Standards Subcommittee to learn about and ensure that the Department and all officers are complying with the requirements set by the State for police officers and agencies.

This afternoon, law enforcement officers and agencies from across West Virginia were honored at the West Virginia Governor's Highway Safety Program Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Award Luncheon. This event recognizes outstanding performances in traffic safety for both agencies and individual officers. Officers and agencies throughout the State were presented awards for traffic safety enforcement in numerous categories, including Speed Enforcement, Distracted Driving, and Impaired Driving.

During this event, Chief Freeburn was awarded the West Virginia Top DRE (Drug Recognition Expert) Award for performing the most drug influence evaluations of any individual DRE in the State of West Virginia in 2025.

Congratulations to all officers, deputies, troopers and agencies that were presented awards on a year of great work! And thanks to the West Virginia Governor's Highway Safety Program for the continued support of Law Enforcement throughout West Virginia!

Barrackville PD April 2026 Report

In April, the Barrackville Police Department had 203 calls for service. Included was numerous dispatched calls, school zone details, requested speed enforcement patrols, and area patrols. The Department also conducted 19 traffic stops, which resulted in 6 citations and 1 arrest. We have noticed that speeds have been declining through town, especially through the school zone, with only 1 school zone citation being issued in April. Thank you to everyone that has been helping keep the community safe!

The Department also hired a police clerk to assist with court procedures and other administrative tasks.

Last night the Town of Barrackville hosted their Annual First Responder's Appreciation Dinner and we would like to thank everyone that made the event possible and was able to attend.

With the weather hopefully warming soon, we hope to see everyone out and about through Town this spring and summer. Thanks to everyone for the continued support!

Tomorrow, Wednesday April 29, Barrackville School is having a 3 hour early dismissal. To ensure safety of students and parents, officers will be activating the School Zone lights and putting out signs between approximately 11:30am and 1:00pm. During those times, the School Zone Speed Limit of 15 MPH will be in effect and enforced. Please help ensure everyone's safety during this dismissal by slowing down and obeying instructions from officers or school officials during dismissal. Thank you for helping keep the community safe!

Barrackville PD March 2026 Report

In March, the Department handled 240 Calls for Service. Included in those is numerous area patrols, business checks, school zone details and 57 traffic stops. Traffic stops resulted in 21 citations for various offenses, including 6 for speeding in school zone, and 2 arrests.

We are pleased to announce we have been approved to purchase a new patrol vehicle. We are hoping to have it in service sometime this summer, and will share updates as we can. The funds for this vehicle will come from the Police Protection Fee, so thank you to the citizens of Barrackville for putting the Department in a position to purchase a new, reliable, and custom for the needs of Barrackville, patrol vehicle that will give our officers the best ability to patrol, enforce traffic laws, and respond to calls in Barrackville and throughout the area as needed.

We would also like to thank the community, Town Council, Town Employees, especially the Town Clerk, and the Barrackville Fire Department for all of the continued help and support of building the Police Department. All of the progress made would not be possible without this community that we all feel grateful to be apart of!
