New Illinois Law Establishes Rules for E-Mobility Usage 🚲⚡

This week, the State of Illinois passed new legislation establishing statewide safety standards for electric scooters, skateboards, electric and gas-powered bikes, and motor-driven cycles. The new law classifies electric scooters and skateboards as “e-micromobility devices.” It also creates a separate category for motor-driven cycles, which includes electric bikes, gas bikes and e-scooters capable of speeds greater than 28 mph.

For motor-driven cycles, operators will need a special driver’s license, and the vehicles must be titled, insured and properly equipped to operate on public streets. These requirements do not apply to other e-mobility devices.

Please take a moment to review the helpful graphic to familiarize yourself with the new requirements and restrictions for the different types of electric and gas-powered devices. Illinois’ new law takes full statewide effect on Jan. 1, 2027. For additional information, visit the Illinois Secretary of State's website at ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/traffic-safety/micromobility-in-illinois.html

The Village of Barrington also encourages residents to report reckless or unsafe use of e-mobility devices by calling 911. This allows the Barrington Police Department to respond promptly and address the situation.

Thank you, Barrington Area Development Council!

**Some of Barrington’s strongest organizations started with a conversation about what our community needed. 🌿**

In the 1960s, as suburban growth began changing the Barrington area, a group of local citizens came together to think about the future of our community and how to protect the open spaces and natural environment that make this area so special.

That conversation helped lead to the formation of the **Barrington Area Development Council (BADC) in 1966** and, a few years later, to an important study examining conservation needs in our region.

One of its recommendations? Create a citizen-led organization dedicated to protecting Barrington’s natural landscape.

In 1971, **Citizens for Conservation (CFC)** was born.

More than 50 years later, CFC continues that work, protecting and restoring hundreds of acres of natural habitat, educating our community, and bringing volunteers together around a shared commitment to conservation. Their motto says it beautifully: **“Saving Living Space for Living Things.”**

This is what **Champion Community**, one of BADC’s Three Cs, looks like in action: identifying a community need, bringing people together, and helping good ideas grow into organizations with lasting impact.

We’re proud that CFC is part of BADC’s history!
