As announced at the last Board of Trustees meeting, Barrington Public Library is thrilled about the July 1 opening date of our brand-new rooftop pool, officially designated the Barrington Public Library Aquatic Reading Center.
Our staff is hard at work to make sure everything is in place for opening day. Rest assured, the BPL Aquatic Reading Center will be fully staffed by certified lifeguards — because we take both reading and water safety very seriously.
We are currently accepting applications for certified lifeguards who are passionate about water safety and, ideally, literature.
Qualifications:
🛟Valid lifeguard certification
📚Ability to recommend a good beach read while scanning the water
🌴Comfort with heights
🗣️Experience shushing swimmers preferred but not required
More Information About the Aquatic Reading Center:
Opening on July 1, 2026, the Barrington Public Library Aquatic Reading Center features a full 25-yard rooftop pool, complete with lounge chairs, a poolside bar, and native palm trees — because we've always believed a great library should offer everything you need for a perfect day. Why should the beach have all the good reads?
Important details:
✅Pool hours will be Monday–Friday, 10 am–4 pm and Saturday–Sunday, 12–4 pm.
✅Open to all Barrington library cardholders.
✅Lap lanes are designated quiet zones.
✅Splashing is subject to the same noise policies as the library.
✅Seating is first-come, first-served.
✅Children and teens under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
To complete the experience, we're offering a special collection of waterproof books for all ages available for checkout at the Circulation Desk — ideal for reading while you float, lounge, or pretend you're somewhere tropical.
Inflatable pool toys, goggles, and beach towels are also available through our Library of Things. No other library materials are permitted on the pool deck including newspapers.
Sunscreen is strongly encouraged. Splashing is, regrettably, inevitable. And yes, our quiet study spaces may smell faintly of coconut this summer.
