In 1973, a fire at the National Personnel Records Center destroyed millions of military personnel records. The fire primarily affected many Army Veterans discharged between 1912 and 1960 and certain Air Force Veterans discharged between 1947 and 1964.

If your military records were destroyed or damaged, ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐œ๐š๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐•๐€ ๐›๐ž๐ง๐ž๐Ÿ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐š๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.

The VA may be able to use other sources to help reconstruct information about your service, including unit records, morning reports, hospital admission records, and other available documentation. VA may also consider other supporting evidence, such as statements from people who knew about an event or condition, letters, photographs, private medical records, and other relevant evidence.

Recently, VA also announced changes intended to make the process easier for Veterans affected by the 1973 fire, including reducing repeated requests for the same information.

Shellie has been working as a ๐•๐ž๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐Ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฌ, serving Veterans here in Barron County as well as previously in another county. As the County Veterans Service Officer, she helps Veterans navigate the VA system, including forms, claim development, obtaining benefits, and understanding the benefits available to them. She also handles the administrative responsibilities that come with leading the office.
When asked what she enjoys most about assisting Veterans, Shellie said:

And there's a side of Shellie you might not expect! For about six years, she was a ๐ฌ๐ก๐ž๐ฉ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐š ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐š๐›๐ฒ ๐ƒ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฌ๐ก๐ž๐ž๐ฉ. As she describes them, โ€œThey are like little cotton balls of joy.โ€ ๐Ÿ‘
Her advice to Veterans is simple: โ€œ๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐•๐’๐Ž ๐ข๐Ÿ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ž ๐š ๐ช๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ซ ๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ ๐š๐ง ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ.โ€ Sometimes the office can answer questions over the phone, potentially saving a Veteran a trip, time, and gas.
