It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our Brother Garret Miller as a result of an on-duty medical emergency while assigned to ME366.

Captain Miller has served as a member of the Barstow Fire Protection District since September 10, 2017. He also served as a member of the United States Forrest Service-San Bernardino National Forrest and Fort Irwin Fire Department.

Our brother Garret passed peacefully last night surrounded by his family and loved ones. At this time we ask that you please keep the Miller Family in your thoughts and prayers.

Currently, we are supporting the Miller family during this difficult time and initiating the planning to suit fit for his celebration of life which is tentatively scheduled for November 13, 2024 at Victor Valley College.

Today marks the one year anniversary of Barstow Fire Department’s Ret. Fire Captain John McNelis’ passing. John lost a long battle with stage 4 cancer as a result of his selfless service to the citizens within the fire district. Even though John is no longer with us, his family continues to sacrifice. We will never allow their father/husband to be forgotten. May God bless the McNelis family.

A tragic off-duty accident that took the life of Engineer Shepard of the Apple Valley Fire Department. Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers of the Apple Valley Professional Firefighters Association and the Shepard family. Donations will go to benefit his wife and two children during this difficult time.

Loved ones are mourning the death of an Apple Valley Fire engineer, who was off-duty when he was involved in an off-road motorcycle collision.

A true hero. May God bless the Perez family and our brothers at the Barstow Police Department.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our colleague and friend, retired Barstow Police Corporal Rudy Perez.

Corporal Rudy Perez joined the Barstow Police Department as a police officer in 2008. During his career at the Barstow Police Department, he was a Crime Impact Detective, School Resource Officer and Field Training Officer. In 2021, Corporal Perez was promoted to the rank of Corporal where he held the positions of the Administrative Corporal and Patrol Corporal.

During his career, Corporal Perez earned a “10851” award, which recognized his ability to locate and recover numerous stolen vehicles. Corporal Perez retired from the Barstow Police Department in 2023 after 15 years of dedicated service to the Barstow community.

On behalf of the Barstow Police Department, we send our condolences to Corporal Perez’s family. We thank the family for sharing Corporal Perez with our department. We will never forget the sacrifices he and his family made in his exceptional service to this community.

Steve Ross selflessly served the City of Barstow and residents of the fire district for over 30 years.
