Training is a constant part of the job for our crews. Whether it’s live fire training, paramedic scenarios, or intense drills like last week’s downed firefighter rescue training, we’re always working to improve our response, communication, and overall performance.

One of the most important parts of any drill happens after it ends. Crews take time to talk through what went well, what could have gone better, and where adjustments can be made. Feedback from firefighters, officers, and chiefs helps us improve not only our strategy and timing, but also the safety of everyone involved.
That level of communication and accountability during training helps make sure we’re prepared and clear-headed when real emergencies happen.

It’s CPR & AED Awareness Week, which is a great reminder that anyone can help save a life.

More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals each year in the United States. When CPR is started immediately and an AED is used as soon as possible, a person's chance of survival can double or even triple. Unfortunately, less than half of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from a bystander before first responders arrive.

There are two steps you should do if you see someone suddenly collapse:
1. Call 911
2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of a song that has 100 to 120 beats per minute. (Two hands for adults, 1-2 hands for teens, two thumbs for infants)

We want to encourage everyone to learn CPR and become familiar with AEDs. You never know when that knowledge could help save the life of a friend, family member, neighbor, or even a complete stranger. At Bartlett Fire, we offer a blender CPR training course alongside HeartCode BLS in the form of an independent online course followed by a hands-on session at our station. If you are interested in signing up for the District's blended CPR course, please email FF/PM Galloway at [email protected] or visit our website for more information.

This past Saturday we held our first Grandparents: Getting Started Course at Station 1.

Taught by certified Safe Sitter instructors, this 3-hour, instructor-led course helps participants stay up to date on childcare practices while reviewing essential safety and rescue skills. Topics covered include injury prevention, first aid, choking rescue for infants and children, and child and infant CPR.

We will keep you updated with future class dates in the future.

For Stroke Awareness Month, The Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital Mobile Stroke Unit stopped by Station 1 yesterday so our crews could get some more hands-on experience with the unit and learn more about how it works alongside us on stroke calls.

The Mobile Stroke Unit is essentially a specialized ambulance built specifically for stroke patients. It’s equipped with a CT scanner and a highly trained medical team, allowing stroke assessments and treatment to begin before the patient arrives at the hospital. When someone calls 911 with stroke-like symptoms, the unit can respond alongside Bartlett Fire crews to help speed up care when every minute matters.

2 million neurons are lost every 10 minutes during a stroke, meaning the MSU plays a big role in reducing neurological deficits following a stroke. The faster a stroke is identified and treated, the better the outcome can be for the patient. We appreciate Northwestern Medicine for taking the time to train with our crews and bring this advanced level of care to the communities we serve.

Training this week focused on one of the toughest situations firefighters can face: rescuing a downed firefighter from inside a structure.

Crews worked through dark, smoke-filled rooms with debris intentionally placed in their path while loud music and radio traffic added to the chaos to make the scenario feel as realistic as possible. We kept the original audio in this video so you can get a better feel of what it’s like to go through this training.

While searching for the firefighter, crews also had to communicate with each other and Battalion Chief over the radio, monitor both their own air supply and the downed firefighter’s air, and assess their condition once located.
In this scenario, firefighters had to remove the downed firefighter through a tight opening in the training tower, around multiple corners, and up a flight of stairs before reaching their exit point.

These drills are physically and mentally demanding, but training like this helps prepare our crews for high-stress situations where every second matters.

As temperatures start heating up, we want to remind everyone to keep an eye on sun and heat safety, especially for children.

Kids can overheat much faster than adults, so it’s important to make sure they’re staying hydrated, taking breaks in the shade, and wearing sunscreen when spending long periods outside. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea, headache, heavy sweating, or unusual fatigue.

If a child becomes confused, stops sweating, has trouble responding, or seems severely overheated, call 911 immediately. Taking a few extra precautions can go a long way in keeping everyone safe while enjoying the summer weather.
