Another step toward safer streets. Significant drainage improvements along Maine Avenue have made the construction of a new 0.58‑mile sidewalk possible. The sidewalk will span from Combee Road to Reynolds Road, and will improve access and reduce risk for residents and Oscar J. Pope Elementary students.

Polk County Government Florida

On April 21, Commissioners approved a new construction agreement with Rogar Management & Consulting of Florida, LLC. for the Maine Avenue Sidewalk project in Lakeland.

The $2.42 million agreement authorizes the company to construct a 0.58-mile-long sidewalk in addition to creating significant drainage enhancements along Maine Avenue, which spans from Combee Road to Reynolds Road in Lakeland. The project will create a continuous, accessible pedestrian pathway that will enhance safety and mobility for residents and students accessing Oscar J. Pope Elementary School.

During National Work Zone Awareness Week, Polk TPO asks our community to slow down, stay alert and help ensure the safety of drivers and the crews working to improve Polk County’s transportation network. Construction zones are a sign of progress, but they also require patience and care from drivers. Do these five things to ensure safety when passing work zones:

- Obey reduced speed limits
- Eliminate distractions
- Maintain safe following distance
- Follow signs and flagger directions
- Merge early and safely

Central Polk Parkway is on the move! The S.R. 570B extension will add a new four lane roadway to enhance safety and improve connectivity across Polk County. Polk County Parks & Recreation is hosting a Bicycle Rodeo from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 25 at Loyce E. Harpe Park, 500 W. Carter Road, Mulberry.

The free event includes fun activities, bicycle inspections, minor bike repairs, skills stations and prizes.

This event is intended for children 6 to 12 years old.
Kids must bring their own bike and helmet and also be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children must already know how to ride a bicycle or be equipped with training wheels.
