Last night we conducted a simulated mass casualty training with a side by side rollover and multiple patients with injuries ranging from a hand amputation, abdominal injuries to head trauma with eye injuries. It was a great training for our team and really appreciate the participation from our neighbors at Park County Search and Rescue. Thanks to Dr Elise Lowe, our medical director, for the help in planning and to Dr Arron Billin, Mike Poulsen, and Josh Kirkman for coming over to be simulated patients!

Yesterday, November 3, at approximately 6am, Big Horn County Search and Rescue responded to call #46 for this year. A 20 year old Gillette man was hunting in the Adelaide Lake area and was supposed to have been home the previous day but had not returned. A deputy and another family member checked trailheads and roads the night before but were not able to locate a vehicle. Search and rescue responded and found the subject unharmed in his pickup which had become stuck the day he went in to hunt. The subject was brought out and reunited with family. The mission was complete and all members were off the mountain by 1130 am.

Mission #29 Yesterday, July 27, 2025, at approximately 1:30 pm, a text to 911 was transferred from Washakie County to the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department about a 73 year old female who was involved in a horse accident approximately .75 miles south of Battlepark Campground in the Big Horn National Forest. Big Horn County Search and Rescue was paged out to the incident as well as Ten Sleep ambulance. A Forest Service law enforcement officer in the area also responded to the scene. Both Ten Sleep ambulance personel and the Forest Service officer were able to make contact and began initial care. First Flight of Wyoming was requested to insert SAR members to the scene and accepted the request. First Flight flew to the scene initially with a Big Horn County SAR/Cody Regional paramedic and a Big Horn County SAR EMT and were able to land approximately 150 yds from the patient. The two SAR members made contact and continued care and with help from the first responders, moved the patient to the landing zone while the First Flight helicopter returned to Greybull for the medical flight crew. First Flight returned to the scene, loaded the patient and flew the patient to a Sheridan, Wy hospital for further treatment. All team members were off the mountain and the mission was complete by 8:30 pm. A huge thanks to Ten Sleep Ambulance personnel for responding, hiking to the patient and beginning initial care, for the Forest Service officer who hiked in and gave updated coordinates and found an appropriate landing zone, to First Flight of Wyoming who once again saved our team hours of driving and hiking , to the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department officers and dispatchers who helped coordinate and to our volunteers who gave their time again to make this mission a success. We are so grateful for all the agencies we are privileged to work with.

On Thursday, July 17,2025, at approximately 8:00 am, Big Horn County SAR was paged out on our 28th mission of the year as the result of a text from a Garmin Inreach requesting emergency evacuation from an individual on Cloud Peak in the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Because of the remote location, First Flight Of Wyoming was requested to insert teams below the coordinates and the Wyoming Army National Guard was also requested in the event a hoist was needed for evacuation. A team was flown in by First Flight and tried to locate the subject but was unable to find the subject initially. Multiple people on the mountain were made aware of the search and later in the day, at approximately 2:00 pm, a text to 911 was received about possible mirror signals from a steep face on Cloud Peak not far from the original coordinates. A second team, on a Wyoming Army National Guard Blackhawk, was flown back to Cloud Peak and searched the new area but were unable to locate the subject. After searching the route to the summit several times, the decision was made to check the base camp area again to see if the individual had made it down. The subject was located unharmed at one of the base camp sites and it was determined that the subject had inadvertently sent a preset text message without realizing it and then shut his Inreach off and was unable to be contacted. The mission was complete and all teams were off the mountain by 5:00 pm. A huge thanks to First Flight of Wyoming and the Wyoming Army National Guard for their support. It was a long day but without air support it would have been much more difficult.
