EMS Week โ€“ Recognition Day & Remembrance Day

Recognition Day โ€” a time to honor the dedicated individuals and supporters who make emergency medical services possible every single day.

Bassett Volunteer Rescue Squad would like to recognize Jonathan Joyce for an incredible 25 years of service. Jonathan currently serves as our Infection Control Officer and remains a valued associate member of our organization. His years of dedication and commitment to protecting both our providers and patients have made a lasting impact on our squad and our community. Thank you, Jonathan, for your service and continued support of EMS.

We would also like to extend a very special thank you to the anonymous citizen who recently donated water and Gatorade to our squad. Acts of kindness and support like this mean more than words can express and help keep our crews going during long shifts and emergency responses.

EMS is built on teamwork โ€” from providers, support staff, associate members, volunteers, and community supporters working together to improve outcomes for those we serve.

Thank you to everyone who supports EMS and the mission of Bassett Volunteer Rescue Squad. ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ’™

Today we pause during EMS Week to observe Remembrance Day โ€” a day dedicated to honoring the EMS providers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, and healthcare professionals who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

In EMS, we answer calls during peopleโ€™s worst moments, often placing ourselves in difficult and dangerous situations to help our communities. Today we remember those who gave their lives while serving others and reflect on the courage, compassion, and selflessness that define emergency services.

We also remember the providers we have lost along the way โ€” coworkers, mentors, friends, and family members whose dedication helped shape the EMS profession and touched countless lives.

Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Please take a moment today to remember and honor all those who served before us. ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

๐Ÿš‘Save A Life Day๐Ÿš‘

Every second counts when it comes to saving a life. During Save a Life Day this week, we encourage everyone to learn the importance of CPR and Hands-Only CPR. Using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) along with CPR can greatly increase the chance of survival during cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed to be simple to use and provide step-by-step instructions to help save a life.

Hands-Only CPR is simple:๐Ÿซ€ Call 911๐Ÿซ€ Push hard and fast in the center of the chest๐Ÿซ€ Continue until help arrives

Immediate CPR can double or even triple a personโ€™s chance of survival during cardiac arrest. You do not have to be a medical professional to make a difference โ€” ordinary people save lives every day.

At Bassett Rescue Squad, teamwork is at the heart of everything we do. From emergency calls to community events, it takes dedicated volunteers working together to serve our community when it matters most.

If youโ€™ve ever wanted to make a real difference, now is the time. We are currently accepting applications for volunteers! Whether you want to serve on the ambulance, help behind the scenes, or simply give back to your community, there is a place for you on our team.

๐Ÿš‘ Join Bassett Rescue Squad and help us continue saving lives together.

๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ’™ EMS Week 2026 โ€” Caring for Our Smallest Patients ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿš‘

Children are not just โ€œsmall adults.โ€ Pediatric emergencies require specialized training, equipment, and teamwork to provide the best possible care when every second counts.

At Bassett Volunteer Rescue Squad, our providers train to care for infants, children, and teenagers during some of the most stressful moments families may ever face. From respiratory emergencies and allergic reactions to trauma and critical illness, EMS providers must be prepared for unique pediatric challenges.

Virginia continues working to improve pediatric emergency care through the Virginia EMS for Children (EMSC) Program, an initiative supported by the Virginia Office of EMS. Programs across the Commonwealth focus on:๐Ÿ‘ถ Pediatric emergency preparedness๐Ÿš‘ Specialized pediatric EMS training๐Ÿ“š Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) programs๐Ÿฉบ Improving pediatric readiness for EMS agencies and hospitalsโค๏ธ Injury prevention and child safety education

These initiatives help ensure children receive high-quality emergency care no matter where they live in Virginia.

Because when it comes to caring for kids โ€” teamwork matters. ๐Ÿ’™

โ€œImproving Outcomes, Togetherโ€

This week, we proudly recognize the dedicated members of Bassett Volunteer Rescue Squad and EMS professionals everywhere who work tirelessly to protect and serve our community.

๐Ÿ’™ Day 1 & 2 โ€” Education & Safety ๐Ÿ’™

EMS is more than responding to emergencies โ€” itโ€™s about preparing, educating, and keeping our community safe before a crisis ever happens. Through ongoing training, continuing education, and public safety outreach, our crews are constantly working to improve patient outcomes together.

One of the simplest ways the public can help protect first responders is by following Virginiaโ€™s Move Over Law. When approaching emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside with flashing lights activated, drivers are required to move over to another lane when safe to do so โ€” or slow down significantly if changing lanes is not possible.

Every time you move over and slow down, you help protect EMS providers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, tow operators, and highway workers who are working just feet from traffic.

๐Ÿš‘ Together, we educate.
๐Ÿš‘ Together, we stay safe.
๐Ÿš‘ Together, we improve outcomes.

Thank you to all EMS professionals and public safety partners for your dedication to serving our communities every day.
