Unlocked, parked cars, especially at home, sometime become places to explore or to hide in for curious children.

As temperatures heat up, this innocent play can quickly become an emergency for unsupervised children left in hot cars.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recommends locking parked cars, even if you are not a caretaker. And, if you can't find your child, you should always check the car.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING

The National Weather Service has issued a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for Bastrop County until 7:30 PM this evening.

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Intense thunderstorm lines can produce brief tornadoes and widespread significant wind damage. Although a tornado is not immediately likely, it is best to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. These storms may cause serious injury and significant property damage.

Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with these storms. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

Ensure you have a way to receive warnings and check notification settings on your phone to ensure Wireless Emergency Alerts are enabled.

You should monitor latest forecasts and remain weather aware.

It's going to heat up with the summer days upon us. Triple-digit temperatures create challenges in many areas of our lives. Reviewing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) Extreme Heat Planning Timeline graphic here will help us in preparing for the summertime heat.

Some key reminders include the following:

☀ Become trained in first aid and heat-related emergencies.

☀ Check that your air conditioners and fans are in working order.

☀ Reschedule outdoor activities.

☀ Check on friends, family, neighbors, and pets.

☀ Take breaks, drink plenty of water, and use a buddy system if working outdoors.

Do you live in an apartment complex or an RV Park?

Is your number up? Can we find you in an emergency?

Apartment numbers are usually not a problem for responders. Apartment buildings in a complex usually have the range of apartment numbers posted on each building. We might have to climb the wrong stairs a couple of times before we find your apartment. The main thing is – Is the complex's 9-1-1 address clearly posted where responders can see it from each direction of approach? If not, please share this information with your property management.

RV Park residents - If the park's 9-1-1 address clearly posted where responders can see it from each direction of approach? If not, please show this information to your property management. Individual units should have their number clearly posted. (See below.)

Bastrop County will make highly-visible signs with residents' 9-1-1 address for $5 each. Grab the form and order yours today.

Typically, a residence probably needs three of them.

For Central Texans, sometimes it feels warmer outside than the temperature on the outdoor thermometer shows. The relative humidity, combined with the actual temperature creates what is known as the "feels-like temperature."

The table here of temperature and relative humidity, presented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), represents the increase in danger through the following colors:

Yellow -- Caution

Tangerine -- Extreme Caution

Orange -- Danger

Red -- Extreme Danger

Stay mindful of the weather forecast and your body's signals for heat-related disorders such as heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, and confusion.
