๐Ÿ˜Ž Call 911 if someone shows signs of high body temperature, confusion or unconsciousness. These are signs of an EMERGENCY brought on by HEAT STROKE.

Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management appreciates the partnership we have with wildland firefighters near and far who have provided support during wildland fires in our area.

Today is National Wildland Firefighter Day, and Texas A&M Forest Service is recognizing the many honorable firefighters who help protect our great state and country.

For many, barbecue grills fired up, pools packed with laughter and fireworks cascading from the sky signal family and friends coming together to celebrate the Fourth of July. Keep your Fourth of July fun a celebration and not a disaster.

๐Ÿš— Buckle up, drive friendly, and avoid parking on dry, grassy areas.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Watch out for each other while boating, tubing and swimming.

โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ Observe local regulations for burning and for fireworks. These vary from county to county.

๐Ÿ” When grilling, tend the pit and have a nearby water source in case embers escape.

๐ŸŽ‡ It's best to leave the fireworks to the professionals. But, if you are setting up your own display, use fireworks properly per manufacture instructions. Never aim fireworks at people, animals, or buildings. Have a water source nearby.

06/27/2024

Just running in for a minute while leaving a child or pet in an unattended, hot vehicle or being on "auto pilot" while headed to a destination, may be the last minute you will ever spend with that child or pet.

The National Weather Service suggests that ๐Ÿš— VEHICLES ๐Ÿš— can go from a SAFE TEMPERATURE to an UNSAFE TEMPERATURE in just 2 minutes.

๐Ÿš— As a good Samaritan, whenever in a parking lot, you see someone such as a child, elderly person, or pet locked in a hot car, call 911 and have someone else go in to the store to report the license plate number and make of car to customer service so that a notification can be made in store. When you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

๐Ÿš— When vehicles are parked in your driveway, keep them locked as children will sometimes wander out unexpectedly to play in the vehicle.

๐Ÿš— Parents and caregivers, come up with reminders that you have children buckled in the backseat of a car. Place in the backseat area a cell phone, work bag, exercise bag, keys, or some other tangible object you would have to grab upon exiting your car.

๐Ÿš— Set a phone alarm to ring upon arriving at your destination. Make sure your child's or pet's name is included in the alarm notification.

The above tips came from the National Safety Council. Their free, 10-minute on-line course "Children in Hot Cars" can be found in English and Spanish at https://carseateducation.org/hot-cars.

06/24/2024

Take care of those populations that cannot take care of themselves. Not only does this include people of the oldest and youngest populations but also pets and livestock.

Just like humans, pets and livestock can suffer from heat-related illnesses. These can be prevented by following several steps:

๐Ÿถ Provide a cool environment. If the animal cannot be housed inside a cool residence, have a shaded outdoor area or ventilated outdoor shelter.

๐Ÿฎ Make available ways for animals to cool their body temperatures. Access to tanks, creeks, the river, cool-water wade pools, misters and even fans can make a real difference.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Always have fresh, cool water available to pets and livestock. During these hot days, the water must be changed routinely.

๐Ÿฑ Keep the animals off hot pavement, sidewalks, and rocky areas.

๐Ÿš— Never leave pets in unattended, hot vehicles.

๐Ÿ‘œ Create an emergency go-bag for your pets including updated vaccination records.

06/20/2024

Recognize your body's signs of struggle during these dangerously hot days. When your body heat rises too rapidly or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, body temperature rises, and you could suffer from heat-related illness.

Ignoring MUSCLE CRAMPS and HEAT EXHAUSTION could lead to a life-threatening HEAT STROKE. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), EXTREME HEAT causes more deaths each year than any other weather event.

For more information about heat-related symptoms and precautions to take, see https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat-illness.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND OTHERS.
