During these cooler-weather days, take on the task of protecting your property against wildfire. For those living in the Lost Pines, fallen pine needles on roofs and in rain gutters can especially pose a wildfire risk.

Fallen leaves can build up on, around, and under your home - increasing your home's risk to wildfire. Help protect your home from wildfire by removing leaves from gutters and roofs, under decks and porches, and against exterior walls.

Fall and winter holidays call for family and friends to gather around the fire pit during those cooler, crisp evenings.

Properly prepare so that this fun becomes a sweet memory.

๐Ÿ’ง Have a water source nearby

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Check for day-of and next-day weather conditions for little wind and high humidity

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Place pit in center of yard 20 to 25 feet away from burnable materials including vegetation around and underneath pit, power lines and structures. With portable fire pits, move to a location with a windbreak

Avoid placing fire pit on wood or composite decks

๐Ÿ”ฅ Sit on upwind side of fire pit to avoid flames and smoke

๐ŸŒญ Skewer marshmallows or hot dogs on metal rod or grill fork with a heat-proof handle

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿง‘Supervise children around the fire pit

๐ŸงฏDon't leave fire unattended

โ›๏ธ When using a wood-burning fire pit to douse the fire, spread out the coals, ash and unburnt logs in a thin layer. Using a garden hose, fan spray the pit to lower the temperature. Saturate the area until all embers die

It's that time again to "FALL BACK" or, in other words, move back clocks one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, to what is called "standard time." Standard time will be in effect through Sunday, March 10, 2024.

With the routine of time change, make it a safety practice to change batteries and test smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and NOAA weather radios.

In a week's time, we've seen record high temperatures quickly drop to record low temps.

Winter's knocking, and it could be harsh. Prepare now. Have enough resources on hand to sustain you and your family at home for at least 72 consecutive hours perhaps with no electricity during periods of that time.

Make a plan for pets and livestock during the frigid temperatures.

Check this list and gather resources over time.....

Bastrop County appreciates all the unsung heroes who support first responders and residents in emergency preparedness, response and recovery.

We can count on numerous volunteers to serve, offer education, set up an emergency hotline, secure meals for first responders, identify shelter for evacuees, and provide other resources.

Today, we recognize the Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team (BCLTRT), the Bastrop, Smithville, and Elgin Chambers of Commerce, Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD), Bastrop County Community Emergency Response Team (BCCERT) and the numerous volunteer and non-government organizations.

During every emergency response, we appreciate all Bastrop County first responders who prioritize saving lives during every emergency. Today is National First Responders Day, as designated by Congress in 2017. This day recognizes the heroic men and women who make it their business to take immediate action when disaster strikes.

Our firefighters, police, EMTs & paramedics and 911 communications operators are highly skilled professionals. They spend hours training and exercising their skills to be ready to respond and save lives during emergencies.

We also recognize other emergency first responders who keep our residents safe during emergencies and who help restore things back to normal during and after the disaster, including the Cities of Bastrop, Smithville, and Elgin public works departments, Bastrop County road and bridge teams and all city, county, and privately owned utility departments (communications, electric, gas, water and wastewater).

10/09/2023

"The 25th annual Capital Area Interagency Wildfire and Incident Management Academy, held at Camp Swift Training Center, started on October 6th and will run through the 18th. During this time, over 300 firefighters from across the state, and 9 other states, will attend classes from basic wildfire response through high level incident management. Coordinated by Texas A&M Forest Service, the Academy brings in professionals from US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and more, to train students.

Two of the classes taught include the possibility of completing prescribed fire operations, depending on day-of weather conditions. The most likely day for the prescribed fire to occur are October 10th, 11th, 15th and 18th. These fires will be relatively small, with the largest being around 14 acres.

On top of providing important training opportunities for responders, these burns are designed to meet multiple land management objectives including reducing the accumulation of hazardous fuels and improving ecosystem health.

Each prescribed burn unit has defined weather parameters and firing patterns to ensure that the objectives are met and conducted safely. Academy personnel will monitor all prescribed burns to evaluate achievement of goals and help guide future prescriptions.

Nearby residents may see smoke during ignition operations. These effects will be mitigated by conducting the burns on days with good ventilation so that smoke will be dispersed away from communities.

Bastrop County Community Emergency Response Team graduated 20 participants of FEMA's G317 Introduction to Basic CERT this past weekend.

During the 20-hour training, units covered disaster preparedness, CERT and terrorism, fire safety and utility control, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, CERT organization, and disaster psychology. The training culminated in a simulated disaster exercise at Emile Elementary School Bastrop.

CERT, a national volunteer organization, trains people to assist their families, neighbors, co-workers, and community during emergencies when professional responders may not be immediately available to help. The Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management sponsors Bastrop County CERT.

Thanks to the those who made this G317 training a success:

Shelter in place may become necessary due to instances such as weather-related events like ice storms or tornados, hazardous waste spills, and even terrorism.

It is essential to work towards gathering supplies now. Begin with basic items that would sustain your family for a 72-hour window, such as non-perishable food, hand-cranked can opener, water, a first aid kit and the usual extra batteries.

Next, add items needed for specific emergencies, including the following:

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Plastic sheeting, staple gun, duct tape and tools used for installing additional insulation of home during emergency

๐Ÿฅพ ๐Ÿงค Sturdy shoes, durable clothing items, warm clothing items, depending upon the weather emergency

๐Ÿ’ก A generator is nice to have when electrical power goes out. Remember, though, these must be situated at least 20 feet from the shelter with the engine exhaust directed away from windows and doors. A battery-operated carbon-monoxide detector inside the shelter provides extra safety when utilizing a generator.
