International Society of Bridge Spitters Inspired by an episode of The Andy Griffith show,The International Society of Bridge Spitters is a membership society based in Bastrop, Texas.

The International Society of Bridge Spitters was inspired by an episode of The Andy Griffith show, which aired in 1961. Opie tries to entertain his visiting little girl cousin, but they have no common interests. Finally, Opie hit on a magic solution, asking with those big, excitement-filled eyes and that smiley, freckled face, "Wanna go spit off the bridge?" She agreed and off they went, happy as

could be. This apparently made a big impression on Ken Kesselus a long time Bastrop resident who is a Retired Priest Retired who served as rector of Calvary Episcopal and now is on the City Council. Remembering this T.V. episode, Kenneth invited his wife to spit off the bridge in Austin TX (later named the “Ann Richards” Bridge) on their first date. Upon returning to Bastrop and meeting new friends, with nothing to do after dinner, he invited them to spit of the bridge. In the mid-80’s after a beverage or two at the old 1832 Tavern, spitting off the bridge became a local tradition. Before long, Kesselus created an official organization - the International Society of Bridge Spitters. Members are entitle to a"suitable for framing" certificate to give to all who “ejected saliva” off the history 1924 Bastrop river bridge and T-Shirts are available for sale at the Museum and Visitor Center.
