"Classics" Spotlight of the Week: Dante's The Divine Comedy

Look under 851 DAN to find this classic.

Written in the early 14th century by Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy is more than one of the greatest poems ever written—it is a landmark in the history of Western literature. Exiled from Florence and deeply involved in the political and intellectual conflicts of his time, Dante transformed his personal experiences, political enemies, philosophical ideas, and unrequited love into an extraordinary literary vision. Written in the Tuscan vernacular rather than Latin, the poem helped establish the language that would eventually become modern Italian and influenced writers, artists, philosophers, and thinkers for centuries. More than 700 years later, Dante’s Divine Comedy remains a remarkable window into the medieval world—and into the life and mind of the man who helped reshape literature itself.
