What limits a qubit’s performance? Sometimes, the answer starts at the surface.

In a recently published DOE Office of Science highlight, SQMS researchers identified niobium hydrides in superconducting qubits, revealing a previously unaccounted-for source of decoherence. By combining atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry, researchers observed how these defects form in niobium thin films as devices cool to cryogenic temperatures.

Understanding where this noise comes from is a key step toward improving qubit performance.

Microscopes, x-rays, and spectroscopy tools join forces to identify defects that interfere with delicate superconducting qubit properties.

“In just five years, SQMS has transformed fundamental understanding into tangible progress — from record-setting coherence times to new materials and devices that redefine what’s possible in quantum technology,” said Anna Grassellino, director of the SQMS Center. “This renewal allows us to build on that foundation and take the next leap: moving from discovery to deployment. Together with our partners across national labs, universities and industry, we’re poised to scale quantum systems to a level that will unlock powerful new tools for science, technology and society.”

The SQMS Center enters a new era focused on scaling quantum systems from discovery to deployment — driving innovation in computation, communication and sensing.

Quantum is shaping the future. Be part of it. Apply to join us at Fermilab for "Exploring the Quantum Universe," which will include a quantum symposium, lectures, tutorials, exhibitor showcase, career development and interactive lab tours. ⚛️

We welcome students and professionals to apply to participate in this two-day event to learn about the state of the art and the future of quantum information science and technology. Participants will engage in trainings, career development opportunities and poster sessions.

Industry, academia, national labs, quantum centers and other QIS institutions are invited to host a booth and showcase their work in quantum on Friday, December 5. The showcase component aims to raise awareness of the importance of quantum information science and to demonstrate the richness of the quantum ecosystem.

🗓️Dec 4–5, 2025
📍Hosted at Fermilab
