Charis-Kleio Koraka from the University of Wisconsin-Madison received URA’s Tollestrup Award for Postdoctoral Research for “transformative contributions” to the reconstruction of the CMS particle detector at CERN and offline computing that will enable the Hi-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider physics program.

The annual URA Honorary Awards recognize outstanding scientific and engineering contributions to Fermilab and its mission of driving pioneering scientific discovery.

Fermilab is the host laboratory for U.S. participation in CMS that includes hundreds of physicists from more than 50 institutions. Koraka’s work positions

CMS to fully realize the scientific potential of the HL-LHC, another of Fermilab’s top strategic priorities as it contributes technology and expertise to the upgrade.

Kevin Kelly from Texas A&M University received URA’s Early Career Award. In its award citation, URA recognized Kelly for “extraordinary contributions to our understanding of neutrinos and how their properties will be further elucidated in the current and next generation of neutrino experiments.”

The annual URA Honorary Awards recognize outstanding scientific and engineering contributions to Fermilab and its mission of driving pioneering scientific discovery.

Kelly was also praised for “the development of novel techniques and analyses that allow one to use the current and next generation of neutrino experiments to look for new physics, including the elusive dark matter.”

His work supports the scientific goals of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility, one of Fermilab’s highest strategic priorities.

Silvia Zorzetti won URA’s Engineering Award for her leadership at Fermilab’s Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center, which is one of five DOE-funded research centers working to develop and deploy advanced quantum computers and sensors.

The annual URA Honorary Awards recognize outstanding scientific and engineering contributions to Fermilab and its mission of driving pioneering scientific discovery.

Zorzetti, a principal engineer at Fermilab, was also recognized for what URA described as “pioneering research” on a novel superconducting radio-frequency cavity-based high-efficiency microwave-to-optical quantum transducer.

Happy anniversary to the SQMS Center! 🎉

SQMS is one of five DOE National Quantum Information Science Research Centers.

The center is rooted in Fermilab’s expertise in superconducting radio-frequency cavities, materials and cryogenics — technologies originally developed for particle accelerators — and in the lab’s mission to explore the universe at its most fundamental level.

Since the center began in 2020, SQMS has grown to include 43 partner institutions and more than 300 collaborators working across disciplines to advance superconducting quantum science and technology, building new capabilities and a community around a shared scientific mission.

The Muon g-2 collaboration recently announced a new measurement of a property of the muon called the electric dipole moment. This result shows that if a muon EDM exists, it must be smaller than what the Muon experiment can currently detect.

The experiment, designed to measure the magnetic moment of the muon, is also sensitive to a particle property called the electric dipole moment.

A fraction of a second can be the difference between keeping the particles racing through the accelerator or falling out of tune.

So timing is everything inside a particle accelerator.

Superconducting cavities give gentle nudges at precise times to charged subatomic particles to transfer energy into the beam, accelerating the particles.

While these cavities are extremely efficient, several factors can stand in the way of perfect performance.

So researchers from Fermilab and partners from other national laboratories, universities and industry will use AI to protect that rhythm.

A fraction of a second can be the difference between keeping the particles racing through the accelerator or falling out of tune.

Researchers from Fermilab and partners from other national laboratories, universities and industry will use AI to protect that rhythm. Their project, selected for the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, is poised to reshape how accelerators are controlled, optimized and operated.
