When we think about a fire emergency, we often picture what happens after someone calls 911: dispatchers answer the call, firefighters respond, and mutual aid resources are ready when an incident requires more help.

But some of the most important decisions happen before the alarm ever sounds.

Throughout September, MABAS will focus on the things individuals, families, and neighbors can do before a fire occurs. Small actions such as testing smoke alarms, planning escape routes, and knowing who nearby may need assistance can make a significant difference when seconds count.

You don't need to accomplish everything today. Start with one action and build from there.

The powerful line of thunderstorms that swept across the suburbs August 11 has been preliminarily confirmed as a derecho, bringing wind gusts approaching 100 mph, scattered power outages and widespread damage across Kane County and surrounding communities.

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center said the storm complex, known as a mesoscale convective system, traveled from eastern Iowa into northern Indiana. The center preliminarily confirmed the system as a derecho.

The National Weather Service office in Romeovilleโ€‹ reported wind gusts of 89 mph in Batavia and 97 mph near Aurora Municipal Airport in Sugar Grove as the storm moved through the region.
Illinois has had over 200 tornadoes this year so far.
According to the latest data from the National Weather Service, at least 69 tornadoes have been confirmed within its Chicago coverage area so far in 2026, which sets an all-time record since record-keeping began.

Join us for an Emergency and Disaster Preparedness class.

A community that is prepared for emergencies and disasters is a more resilient community . Being prepared saves lives and speeds up the recovery process.

National Emergency Management Awareness Month

WHAT IS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT?

When people hear the words Emergency Management, they may think only about tornadoes, floods, or major disasters.

But Emergency Management is much more than responding when something goes wrong.

Emergency Management is the work that happens before, during, and after an emergency to help protect our community.

It is built around four important areas:

PREPAREDNESS โ€” Planning, training, exercising, educating the public, and preparing our community before an emergency occurs.

MITIGATION โ€” Identifying hazards and taking steps to reduce their impact before they become disasters.

RESPONSE โ€” Coordinating people, information, resources, and agencies when an emergency occurs.

RECOVERY โ€” Helping the community restore services, support residents, and move toward a new normal after the emergency.

What does Batavia ESDA do?

The City of Batavia Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) is part of our community's emergency management system.
Batavia ESDA currently has 18 dedicated members who train and prepare to support our community and our public safety partners when needed.
Our members assist with:
โ€ข Severe weather monitoring and storm spotting
โ€ข Emergency Operations Center (EOC) operations
โ€ข Communications and radio support
โ€ข Traffic and crowd management
โ€ข Community events
โ€ข Emergency lighting and equipment
โ€ข Fire and emergency Scene Support
โ€ข Emergency preparedness education
โ€ข Damage assessment
โ€ข Resource and logistics support
โ€ข Disaster response and recovery operations
โ€ข Supporting Batavia Police, Batavia Fire, and other community partners

Much of Emergency Management happens quietly, long before an emergency ever occurs.
โ€ข It's writing plans.
โ€ข It's checking equipment.
โ€ข It's training.
โ€ข It's practicing.
โ€ข It's watching the weather.
โ€ข It's building partnerships.
โ€ข It's preparing for the things we hope never happen.

And when something does happen, all that preparation matters.

During National Emergency Management Awareness Month, we want our community to better understand Emergency Management and the people working behind the scenes to help make Batavia more prepared and resilient.
Preparedness starts before the emergency.
Response happens together.
Recovery begins in our community.
Batavia ESDA โ€” Preparing Today. Ready When Needed.
