It is with great sadness that we share former IEA President Reginald “Reg” Weaver, trailblazer for collective bargaining rights in Illinois, passed away on Tuesday at 86.

Reg was an absolute legend. He had a gift at bringing people together and helped transform our union into the powerful force it is today. Reg was the first Black president of the IEA, serving from 1981 to 1987. He later went on to serve as president of the National Education Association, from 2002 to 2008.

This is a MAJOR win for the lawsuit filed by the NEA and the ACLU. This is a MAJOR win for our students, our educators and our public schools!

From ACLU: “This ruling affirms that all students have a right to a full and honest education that reflects the diversity of our communities and our full history.”

🌟 2026 marks a milestone year–commemorating 100 years since the first national observance of Black history in the U.S.! However, we know this month is greater than it's national recognition. As Black History 100 reminds us, “long before national recognition, generations of Black organizers, educators, churches, newspapers and families built these observances from the ground up.” Learn more about each milestone, and celebrate the Black leaders who made it possible: https://blackhistory100.org/

All students, regardless of race, background, or ZIP code, deserve to feel safe and welcomed at school.

Students cannot learn when they are afraid for their safety or the safety of their families, friends, and educators.
