Both Scott and Greg have demonstrated tremendous dedication and commitment throughout the program while continuing to serve our community. Their achievement represents countless hours of studying, training, clinicals, and hard work.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of retired Fire Chief Donald Weigel.

Chief Weigel devoted 45 years to serving our community, beginning his career with the Batesville Fire Department in 1951 and retiring in 1996. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as Assistant Fire Chief for many years before leading the department as Fire Chief for the final 18 years of his service.

Chief Weigel was also a founding member of our EMS Division and was one of the first Emergency Medical Technicians to serve our community. He played an instrumental role in building the foundation of the Batesville Fire Department as we know it today. His vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving our community helped shape generations of firefighters and EMS providers.

Chief Weigel's dedication to the citizens of Batesville and his commitment to the fire service will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on through the department he helped build, the lives he touched, and the members who continue to serve in his footsteps.

Please keep Chief Weigel's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Update- Maintenance and testing are complete. All systems check good.

Maintenance is being performed on the weather siren on Hwy 229 north of Batesville at the Duke Energy substation. You might hear the siren briefly activate. If you have any questions, please call the station at 812-934-2230.

Tuesday, August 4th, 2026

Paving west bound State Road 46 driving lane starting on east end and move west. Start time daybreak (approximately 6:30 AM). West Bound Driving Lane and East Bound Passing Lane restricted.
Expect delays, use alternate route if possible.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION IS UPON US! Avoid the intersection of State Road 46 and State Road 229 if possible. Expect to be rerouted if traveling north/south on State Road 229 trying to cross State Road 46.

Beginning on or around Thursday, July 23, crews will close Main Street/S.R. 229 in Batesville, between Catherine Street and George Street. This closure will allow for patching work. This work is expected to last a few hours and will re-open once work has completed.
