This year in STEAM, 4th grade students created interactive research posters about how diamonds made it to the surface at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas.
Students researched the science behind volcanoes, magma, and diamond formation, then designed informative posters to teach others about what they learned.
But they didnāt stop there.
Students connected their posters to a Makey Makey, which is a type of circuit board that allows physical objects to interact with a computer. They also used coding to program their projects so that when parts of the poster were touched, recordings of their own voices would play and explain each section of the poster.
This was an incredibly advanced project that combined research, engineering, coding, design, teamwork, and creativity all together into one finished product.
Out of all of the 4th grade classes here at West Elementary, we were only allowed to nominate TWO projects to move on to the Student Media Festival state competition.
Just being selected as a nominee was a huge accomplishment because these projects competed against all of 4th grade here at West before advancing to compete against students across the state of Arkansas.
The two projects selected to represent West Elementary were:
āArkansas Diamondsā by Cason Lee, Jack Puckett, and Willa Sours
And āDigging For Diamondsā by Kayden Coleman and Liam Downs
I am incredibly proud of BOTH teams for the creativity, teamwork, and hard work they showed throughout this project.
And Iām excited to announce that BOTH projects placed at the state level!
Digging For Diamonds by Kayden Coleman and Liam Downs received 3rd place in the state!
And āArkansas Diamondsā by Cason Lee, Jack Puckett, and Willa Sours received 1st place in the state!
That is an incredible accomplishment, and we are so proud of all of these students for representing West Elementary so well.
