Panola County 4-H

Panola County 4-H Mississippi 4-H strives to improve the quality of life for Mississippi youth by developing youth potential and by providing hands-on educational programs!

4-H programs are delivered through local county offices of the MSU Extension Service.

4-H is best identified by its green four-leaf clover with an H on each leaf. The four Hs on this emblem stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. These words emphasize the basis of the four-fold development of youth involved in 4-H. Program priorities identified include leadership development, life skills training, developing positive self-esteem, and empowering volunteers.

The Hatch Out Program is always a fun experience. I enjoyed sharing about the life cycle of chickens, bio security practices, incubation, and egg development.

I want to thank North Delta’s amazing teachers and administrators for the partnership that provided this interactive experience to their students.

One common myth surrounding purple martins is that they will eliminate mosquitoes in your landscape! Buying into this myth will only lead to disappointment. These birds mainly eat beetles, dragonflies, moths, butterflies, leafhoppers, horseflies, and wasps. They will occasionally eat mosquitoes, but it only accounts for around one percent of their diet!

If you’re interested in reducing the number of mosquitoes around your home, read here: https://extension.msstate.edu/publications/mosquitoes-west-nile-and-other-encephalitis-viruses-what-you-can-do-protect-yourself

Every year it is a privilege to be a part of the Panola County Livestock Show. This event would not be possible without the support of our community, show sponsors, volunteers, and parents.

The images below, courtesy of Elizabeth Rone, capture our exhibitors, friends, and family taking part in this year’s event. They work hard to select, grow, learn about, and showcase their project animals.

The livestock project cultivates a variety of life skills to include hard work, self discipline, responsibility, record keeping, empathy, goal setting, and communication.

We are very proud of our exhibitors.
