🚂 BIG BOY 4014 IS COMING TO STEUBEN COUNTY! 🚂

On Thursday, June 11, Union Pacific's historic Big Boy No. 4014 — the world's largest operating steam locomotive — will travel through Steuben County, including a scheduled whistle stop in Hornell from approximately 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM.

Thousands of railfans and visitors are expected throughout the county. If you're planning to watch this incredible piece of railroad history, please make safety your top priority:

✅ Stay at least 25 feet from the tracks
✅ View only from safe, approved public locations
✅ Follow directions from law enforcement and emergency personnel
✅ Obey all posted signs
✅ Keep children and pets close
✅ Park legally and safely

❌ Do NOT walk on railroad tracks, bridges, trestles, or rights-of-way
❌ Do NOT trespass on railroad or private property
❌ Do NOT fly drones near the train or rail corridor
❌ Do NOT race or chase the train on local roadways

🌡️ HOT WEATHER SAFETY

Forecasts call for warm and humid conditions. If you're spending time outdoors:

💧 Drink plenty of water
🧴 Apply sunscreen
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
🌳 Take breaks in the shade when possible
👶 Check on children, older adults, and pets frequently
⛈️ If thunderstorms develop, seek shelter in a building or vehicle—never under a tree

🚗 Expect traffic delays, especially in and around Hornell between noon and 4:00 PM. Arrive early, allow extra travel time, and be patient.

It is with great sadness that the Canisteo Fire Department and the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services announce the passing of Life Member, Past Chief and former Emergency Services Director Don Merring. Don was a member of Canisteo Fire Department for 66 years. He served as Director of Emergency Services from 1985 until 1995.

Calling Hours will be Sunday 06/7/2026 from 1-4 at the Canisteo Fire Station. A Firefighter Walkthrough is scheduled for 12:30.

The Funeral will be held on Monday 6/8/2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Canisteo Fire Station

Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery – There will be No Apparatus Processional due to distance between fire station and the cemetery.

CANISTEO: Donald S. “Don” Merring, 90, of East Main Street, passed away peacefully at his home on June 3, 2026. Don was born January 9th, 1936 in Corning, NY to Robert and Esther (Mossberg) Merring.
