Life-Saving Teamwork

On March 20, 2026, a CAP detainee became unresponsive during the intake body scan process at the Steuben County Jail. Recognizing the signs of an active overdose, Corrections Sergeant Brandon Erskine, Corrections Officer Brian Flynn, Corrections Officer Jennifer Smith and Deputy Ryan Phelps administered immediate emergency medical care.
The team successfully administered Narcan and provided supplemental oxygen until the ambulance crew arrived. Due to their rapid assessment, decisive teamwork, and professional training, the detainee made a full recovery.
Sheriff Allard presented Sergeant Erskine, Officer Flynn, Officer Smith and Deputy Phelps with a formal commendation this morning at the Steuben County Legislature's Public Safety and Corrections Committee meeting for their exemplary leadership, integrity, and life-saving service to the community.

Steuben County Celebrates Foster Families During Appreciation Banquet in Bath

May 27th 2026

BATH, NY — An evening filled with gratitude and community spirit took place Tuesday night at the Bath Fire Hall as Steuben County honored the extraordinary foster families who continue to open their homes and hearts to children in need.

More than 50 individuals attended the annual Foster Parent Appreciation Banquet recognizing the selflessness and dedication of foster parents throughout Steuben County. The event celebrated the families who step forward during difficult times to provide safety, stability, and unconditional care for children facing uncertainty in their lives.

For many children, foster parents become much more than caregivers — they become mentors, role models, and a source of hope.

The evening featured a dinner buffet, fellowship, and remarks from county leaders and community members who expressed deep appreciation for the vital role foster families play across the county.

Lise Reynolds, Deputy Commissioner of the Steuben County Department of Social Services led the evening’s program, recognizing the many foster families who continue to make a life-changing difference in the lives of children throughout the community.

Along with numerous county legislators in attendance, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Chair of the Steuben County Legislature delivered remarks and read an official proclamation declaring May as Foster Parent Appreciation Month in Steuben County.

Speakers throughout the evening emphasized that foster parenting is not simply about providing a home — it is about providing hope, guidance, patience, and belonging during some of the most difficult moments in a child’s life. Foster families often help children rebuild confidence, trust, and a sense of normalcy while creating lasting impacts that extend far beyond childhood.

Steuben County Department of Public Works Announces Hammer Creek Road Bridge Closure in Town of Canisteo

BATH, NY — Eric Rose, Commissioner of the Steuben County Department of Public Works, has announced that the bridge located on Hammer Creek Road over Hammer Creek, between County Route 29 and Feenaughty Hill Road in the Town of Canisteo, will be closed to all through traffic beginning June 8, 2026, for approximately eight weeks.

The structure, identified as Bridge No. 07-01-02, will be replaced with a new concrete box culvert as part of Steuben County’s ongoing infrastructure improvement efforts.

There will be no on-site detour available during the closure. Motorists are advised to use Feenaughty Hill Road as the designated detour route and should plan for additional travel time in the area.

The Steuben County Department of Public Works appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during the duration of the project as crews work to improve the safety and reliability of the county’s transportation infrastructure.
