Important Event Update from the Bath Historical Society

We are sorry to share that we will be canceling this year’s Chili Fest community gathering. We know many in town were looking forward to sharing a warm bowl of chili together, and we truly appreciate everyone who planned to attend or help out.

The good news? We’re shifting our full focus to our next big tradition: the 10th Annual Pig Roast!

Keep an eye on our page over the coming days for all the details, including dates, times, and ticket information. Thank you so much for your continued support of the Bath Historical Society—we can’t wait to gather with our neighbors soon!

🌶️ BATH HISTORICAL SOCIETY CHILI FEST! 🍲

Mark your calendars! The Bath Historical Society is hosting our Chili Fest Community Cook-Off & Fundraiser, a fun afternoon of delicious food, great company, and community spirit as we celebrate 250 Years of American Heritage!

🌲 Historical Spotlight: Colonel Timothy Bedel (1737–1787) 🌲

If you live in Bath, New Hampshire, you're walking in the footsteps of one of our town's most influential founding figures: Colonel Timothy Bedel.

Before the United States was even a nation, Bedel was shaping the northern frontier. Here is a quick look at his legacy:

An Early Bath Settler: A veteran of the French and Indian War, Bedel moved his family to Bath in 1769. He was deeply involved in our earliest civic affairs, helping to establish local governance and clear the land.

Voice of the Town: When the American Revolution broke out in 1775, Bath elected Bedel to represent the town in New Hampshire’s new Revolutionary Provincial Assembly.

Leader of "Bedel's Rangers": Recognizing his frontier experience, the Congress commissioned him to raise a regiment to protect the vulnerable northern frontier.

Wartime Legacy: Bedel served at the Battle of Bennington, worked closely with Generals Schuyler and Gates during the Saratoga campaign, and even received personal orders from General George Washington to raise troops to secure the valley.

Defender of Allies: Bedel was instrumental in forming a crucial wartime alliance with the local Abenaki people. After the war, he spent his final years fiercely advocating for the government to honor its promises and grant land to those Native allies.

Colonel Bedel passed away in 1787, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and resilience that helped build the community we call home today.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE!

The Bath Historical Society would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who joined us for our Annual Ghost Walk! We had a fantastic turnout, and the spirits of our town's past truly came to life.

A special round of applause goes to the five incredible Bath Village School students who knocked their presentations out of the park. They stepped back in time to portray some of our local Revolutionary War heroes, bringing history off the pages and into our community.

Missed the walk? Want to see these talented students in action again? You’re in luck!

Encores & Echoes of the Revolution
The students will be doing a special encore presentation of their historical monologues, and the public is warmly invited to attend. Come learn about the brave lives of:

This painting is hanging in the Historical Society -

The Last of its Kind, ca 1950
The Bath Village Covered Bridge (1832) was the last one in America to go over railroad tracks. Actually, it was built more than 20 years before the tracks were laid and it had to be raised to accommodate the trains in 1853 and again in 1920 when trains became larger. At 376 feet long, it is also one of the longest in the nation and has been called a feat of nearly superhuman craftsmanship.

Originally built at a cost of $2,900, the recent repairs and improvements, finished in 2014 were made at exactly 100 times that amount ($2.9 million).
