Health Centers in Schools

Health Centers in Schools HCS operates 7 School Health Centers and 82 School Nurse sites in Baton Rouge public schools--a wholly owned subsidiary of OLOL Children’s Hospital.

Most private schools do not have capability for medical care due to high costs. So, many of these children attend public schools where law requires that the school systems care for them. In spring 2012, 9369 children in EBR public schools had a chronic disease or required special health services. This included:
• 101 diabetics
• 2712 asthmatics
• 154 Sickle Cell patients
• 280 with seizure disorde

• 1879/165 with ADD/ADHD
• 154 requiring medications at school
• 133 requiring EpiPens (treats severe whole-body allergic reactions)
• 1882 children required special medical support (ventilators, heart disease, tracheotomies, immunological disease, genetic disorders, etc.)
