Today marks the beginning of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
Mayor-President Sid Edwards is encouraging all residents to prepare now, even as forecasters predict a quieter-than-average season.
“Low activity does not mean NO activity,” said the Mayor-President. “It only takes one storm to significantly impact our community. Now is the time for residents to take small, practical steps to prepare themselves and their families.”
Prepare Now by Taking These Simple Steps:
Create an Emergency Plan - Develop a plan that outlines what each household member will do, how you will communicate, and accounts for individual needs, including medical conditions, language barriers, access and functional needs, and pets.
Build a Disaster Supply Kit - Gather enough food, water, and essential supplies to last several days. Be sure to include medications and items specific to your household. Store supplies in airtight, easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins.
Safeguard Property - Trim trees and keep them healthy to reduce storm hazards. Secure loose outdoor items and clear gutters and drains to help minimize potential damage.
Stay Informed - Monitor trusted sources such as our City-Parish website, Red Stick Ready on all social media platforms, and the National Weather Service. Timely, accurate information helps guide appropriate actions before, during, and after an emergency.
Help Others Prepare - Check in with family, friends, and neighbors to ensure they are prepared and identify ways you can support one another before and after a storm.
