Last week at the COABE Conference, Louisiana showed up strong!

From powerful learning sessions to meaningful collaboration with colleagues across the country, this conference continues to highlight what’s possible in adult education when we innovate, share, and stay focused on learners.

We were proud to have student leaders in attendance, representing the voice and impact of adult learners across our state.

A special congratulations to our Louisiana award winners who are truly changing lives, one lesson at a time. Your work is making a difference every single day, and it was an honor to celebrate you on a national stage.

We’re heading back to Louisiana inspired, energized, and ready to keep building opportunities for the students and communities we serve—and we can’t wait to welcome the largest adult education conference in the world to New Orleans next year with Louisiana Association for Public, Community, & Adult Education!

Not only did Governor Jeff Landry officially proclaim September as ADULT EDUCATION & FAMILY LITERACY (AEFL) MONTH in Louisiana, but he also gave us this shout-out. What a great way to end the month! 🙌 📜

📢Thanks to the work of LAPCAE (Louisiana Association for Public, Community, & Adult Education) and the Louisiana Community & Technical College System WorkReady U Adult Education network for building awareness and elevating the importance of upskilling and educating adults across our state. 📚✨ Celebrating Adult Education & Family Literacy ✨📚

Meet Torquill, one of our inspiring adult learners! While earning his High School Equivalency, Torquill is also dual-enrolled in Electrical Studies at Louisiana Delta Community College through an Integrated Education & Training (IET) program. (https://www.knoe.com/2025/04/15/ldcc-launches-new-program-winnsboro-campus-offer-ged-alternative/)

Thanks to adult learner dual enrollment, Torquill is earning his diploma and building his career skills at the same time—getting job-ready faster and connecting education directly to an in-demand career field.

⚡🔌"Before I started Adult Education, I didn't feel confident in myself. I doubted what I could do. But learning again -- just taking that first step started to change that. Every class, every assignment, every challenge I faced made me stronger. Now I feel confident, I know I'm capable, and I'm proud of how far I've come."

We’re proud to celebrate Torquill and all adult learners who are showing that it’s never too late to learn, achieve, and succeed! 🙌

We’re proud to support learners who prove that it’s never too late to chase their goals and make a difference. 🙌

💡"I decided to take Adult Education classes to carry out my studies of English as a second language. I need these skills to work in the field of Residential, Commercial, or Industrial Electricity, which is my career goal and the next classes I will take at CLTCC.

🎓 Empowering Adult Learners at CLTCC! 🚀

At Central Louisiana Technical Community College, the WorkReady U Adult Education program is more than just a classroom—it's a launchpad for opportunity. Whether prepping students for high school equivalency, exploring career options like CNA, welding, or patient care technician, or preparing for college-level programs like LPN, they provide guidance every step of the way. CLTCC’s Adult Ed team builds bridges to brighter futures. 💪📚 (https://www.cltcc.edu/adult-education)

💼✨ "When I think of CLTCC, it's really about getting people to work - giving them the education and tools they need to get them in the workforce so that they can go on and live the lives they've imagined for themselves. Flexibility is a cornerstone of our approach to student support. We strive to instill confidence and build up our students through kindness and consistency. We want to give them something to look forward to every day.

Our teachers unite their classrooms by encouraging students to work together, and their compassion makes them feel safe. They are leaders and role models who inspire our learners to take education more seriously. It’s their goal to make a positive impact on each and every student, and to give them the skills and resources to help achieve their dreams." ✅🎉

Adult Education programs like WorkReady U at River Parishes Community College may start with literacy skills and high school equivalency preparation, but they go FAR beyond that. They teach students like Trinika to listen to their hearts, commit to their personal goals, and make their career dreams become a reality. (https://www.rpcc.edu/adult-education)

▶️ 🎯 "I am here because of my passion for returning to school to receive my high school diploma. I've been doing this thing for some time now. My most immediate goal that I have accomplished is finishing what I started. I've learned to be consistent, stay on task, and my goal is to finish on top.

Once I am done with my Nursing Program, I look forward to working in a hospital setting to live out my dreams since I was a little girl. Taking care of my mother set the tone for me to FOLLOW MY HEART." 💙 💚

The power of partnerships is in full force at WorkReady U in River Parishes Community College. Adult Education Director Sarina Lirette sees her role as making strong connections, being a collaborator as well as an advocate, and "really talking to partners and getting them to understand what we do and how our program can benefit them." Through these relationships she and her team are able to create incredible opportunities for upskilling, and uplifting! (https://www.rpcc.edu/adult-education)

💪🩵 "My greatest asset is my team and their ability to know their students, understand their dreams, and the barriers that are in front of them. We have to help students build their self-confidence and give them some skill sets to navigate those barriers. Our mission is to encourage every learner to believe, rise above what they initially thought they were capable of, and finish strong. In order to do that, we have to make students feel capable, seen, and ready to learn.

Our instructors excel at turning fear into excitement and discouragement into drive. They create classrooms where students are treated like teammates, not test-takers. It’s about so much more than reading and writing - they lift learners up with patience, genuine praise, and powerful life lessons. When they leave us, they know that coming back to school for ADULT EDUCATION WAS ALL WORTH IT." 👥 🏅

The message of "It's NEVER too late for a second chance" lies at the heart of Adult Education programs like Livingston Parish Adult Education / Work Ready U (https://adulteducation0.wixsite.com/lppsadulted). But the real heartbeat comes from students like Lizann, who didn't give up on herself and turned her NOT YET into a NOW.

❤️‍🔥 "I decided to take Adult Education classes in order to pursue my lifelong dreams. My most immediate goal is to go to college. I am going to become a social worker to help kids and/or veterans.

There’s so much I’d want to tell my younger self, but I’ll narrow it down to this. Tough it out and finish school-you were SO close and just gave up! And never give up on pursuing your dreams, even if no one believes in you." 🩵

Livingston Parish Public Schools Adult Education program has been serving its community for more than 35 years. Director, Billie Prettlet and her faculty and staff uplift students while helping them map their next steps by keeping them MOVING AND MOTIVATED! (https://adulteducation0.wixsite.com/lppsadulted)

👩‍🏫 "For us, it’s giving students a second chance. We have a firm belief that everybody deserves a second chance. We’re working with the students who weren’t successful in K–12 for some reason, so we try to give them a win early on. We look at their placement scores and put them in the classes they’re strongest in. That way, they can pass a practice test and feel like, “I can do this".

We also give back to our K-12 system with some graduates going to work in our schools. And we’ve had an increase in Livingston Parish employees, who didn’t already have a dipoma, now enrolling in our classes. We do orientations every week because we don’t want students to wait to get started. We want them to know they’re welcome and that we’re ready to help." 🎉

Access to education and employment training are essential for the success and wellness of individuals both living in and also exiting our correctional systems. Our WorkReady U teachers and tutors working in the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections see potential in those who have rarely seen or valued their own abilities. Adult Education is a SECOND CHANCE desperately needed by so many, especially students like John.

📝 "I was definitely nervous at first, being that I was one of the older guys among a group of boisterous young people. However, Chaplain Chris and my peer tutors taught us in a way that was not only relatable but also helped strengthen the bond we classmates desperately needed. Many days we were pushed to our limits, and some were pure frustration. But I knew I just had to get my education. I had made it this far through life and prison and surely wasn’t going to short myself of all the hard work I put in. Lord, You’ve known I’ve wanted this for 36 years, I prayed, this is my opportunity.

This is an achievement of a lifetime that nobody can take away. In many instances, having a diploma equates to better jobs and wages. In all, however, it gives men a sense of pride and esteem that allows them to hold their head higher and more confidently in life’s situations. This class has shown me that there are indeed individuals and groups concerned with the well-being and advancement of incarcerated individuals in Louisiana." 🩵
