Grad Gold

Grad Gold The torchbearers for graduate and professional student issues at LSU - GRAD GOLD and It's Time for S It is a tale with many "unlikes."

In October 2016, the main undergraduate party in the SG Fall Elections decided to drop its postgraduate candidates at the last moment. In the scramble that resulted, William Fath and Jordan Landry banded together in a common mission to provide unmatched service for graduate and professional students' unique needs. Thus began one of the most unusual stories in the long history of LSU Student Govern

ment, a story that has already produced results for LSU's postgraduate population. Unlike most parties, we're not afraid to step in the breach when the "real world" intrudes on those we represent, whether it be the cost of living or travel bans threatening our international students. Unlike most parties, we're willing to look for the best in postgraduate leadership and give them a platform to do good for the students whose work distinguishes LSU as a flagship research university. Unlike most parties, we don't rebrand ourselves and change names every semester, because we're willing to be held accountable for the work we do for those we represent. We stand for a cause, not just one candidate's personal branding. That's why graduate and professional students know that our colors - PhD regalia blue, LSU Tiger gold - are only worn by candidates who are not afraid to shine when the night comes. It's representation of the highest quality...
..quality as good as GRAD GOLD!

The new ranked-choice system in SG is pretty much designed to prevent resounding victories.

Guess what? You delivered anyway, with the highest postgrad turnout in recent memory - and Grad Gold will now be able to fight for students in ALL THREE POSTGRAD DISTRICTS in the Senate!

We would like to thank the It's Time team, from Mia and Angelina on down, for allowing us to team up with a remarkable campaign that understood the critical role postgrads play at this flagship research university and said the things that needed to be said. We look forward to working with your Senate candidates, who will be able to keep the important issues on the table with the SENATE MAJORITY they clinched tonight.

This weekend, we rest. Next week, we continue the cause of delivering for graduate and professional students at LSU. We'll see you on campus then and on the campaign trail in the Fall, because It's Time...
..to STAY GOLD.

As the hours tick down to the opening of polls, here is another of our GSA Member at Large candidates, Reuben Addison:

"Hello, I am originally from Ghana, a West African country located along the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. I am a fourth-year Kinesiology graduate student at LSU. I received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Ghana. I then moved to Canada for my master’s degree and later came down to LSU in 2017 for my Ph.D. My current research focuses on understanding mobility issues in people with neuropathological diseases.

I am currently a member at large for the Graduate Student Association (GSA), acting as a liaison between the university and graduate students. I got the mandate to serve as a member-at-large for the GSA in 2020-21, one of the most challenging moments and unprecedented turn of events bestowed by the pandemic. With my team members' support, we were still able to drive our "student-based" agenda successfully, such as renegotiating extraneous students' fees and currently pushing for affordable healthcare (health insurance) for all graduate students. I also double as a graduate student representative on the LSU Libraries Students Advisory Council, where I contribute to library policies toward graduate students' needs.

I am seeking another term to continue pushing for policies that solely represent the interest of a successful graduate experience."

On this last day before polls open, here's a word from the other half of our Law lineup:

"Hey peers, my name is Brett Leal and I am thrilled to run for a Law Center Senate seat. I have been at LSU for 6 years now, including undergrad, and I have seen consecutive clichés campaign after campaign with no change. This ticket, under Mia and Angelina, feels much different. I want to help translate the positive changes under this new leadership to the law center. It’s Time!"

We continue with our next Grad School Senate candidate on the Grad Gold/It's Time slate:

"I’m Jessie Fay Parrott, and I’m getting my MSc in Geography here at LSU. I specialize in many things climate change, and it’s my passion to educate about it! I got my BA in environmental and sustainability studies and Anthropocene management from Bard College at Simon’s Rock beautiful western Massachusetts. I’m bi, Jewish, and Cuban, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York where I became frustrated with my public education system and the state of the climate crisis. As a young girl I became inspired to pursue a career in science and curriculum content development as an adaptation to the climate crisis.

I’m the president of the Geography and Anthropology Society and I love my LSU community. Getting to know my fellow grad students, it has become very important to me that in running for senate I remain the best advocate for my peers as I can. Grad students are too often forgotten in university communities. As a protector of labor policy and new member of the United Campus Workers of Louisiana Union, I promise you that I will stand by my morals and fight for our rights in this position.

I am thankful that I was raised by strong, compassionate people in my personal and academic communities to be an assertive and radically empathetic person. I believe that I am the right candidate for senate to represent the graduate school, and it’s time to keep fighting for our rights and a safe, prosperous campus."

We continue the It's Time/Grad Gold Senate slate with one of our incumbents, the Grad School delegation's working-class hero:

"Hello, fellow graduate students! I’m Adam Dohrenwend, a second year PhD student in Geography originally from Upstate New York. Prior to LSU, I completed my MA in Geography at the University of Kansas in May 2019. For my undergraduate education I earned a BA in Geography at the State University of New York, College at Geneseo. I have held leadership positions in the planning of many large events, Greek organizations, local election campaigns, scholarly organizations, and a community theatre organization.

As a Senator (and a member of UCW-LA — a labor union for higher education workers in Louisiana), I’m committed to fee reductions and stipend increases. Fees need to be lowered further and collapsed into tuition — something that would immediately result in very significant increases to take-home pay for the many graduate students on assistantships. Furthermore, the lack of quality and affordable health coverage offerings for graduate assistants needs to be at the center of attention. LSU’s poor overall funding levels limit the accessibility and potential of the university’s graduate programs. As a member of the Graduate Affairs Working Group, I succeeded in advocating for the inclusion of these goals in our report for the Graduate School’s new strategic plan.

Many of LSU’s biggest challenges are rooted in the state’s disinvestment from higher education. It’s Time to do something about it. Mia LeJeune, the ticket’s candidate for SG President, is uniquely positioned to make change at the State Capitol, get LSU out of the ditch, and finally improve working conditions for all graduate students! I hope to be able to help her from the Student Senate and I hope we both can count on your vote this Wednesday!"
