New Venue for Ocean Commotion 2026!

For the first time, Louisiana Sea Grant’s Ocean Commotion is heading to LSU AgCenter Burden Gardens on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, and registration is now open!

Ocean Commotion brings K–8 students together for a day of hands-on learning and exploration focused on Louisiana’s coast, environment and natural resources.

The Stephenson Disaster Management Institute (SDMI) invites community members to a workshop on ocean and coastal acidification (OCA) in Louisiana on Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Cypress Bayou Casino Pavilion.

Learn how OCA impacts Louisiana’s environment and economy and explore adaptation strategies and solutions. Dinner will be provided, and participant stipends of $100 are available for up to 30 attendees.

Louisiana Sea Grant's Sea Grant Scholars program was recognized as a Best Management Practice by the National Sea Grant College Program.

The program brings together emeritus staff members whose expertise continues to strengthen Louisiana Sea Grant's mission. Together, the six Sea Grant Scholars provide decades of experience spanning cultural geography, GIS, economics, oyster biology, alligator management, aquaculture, extension, education and traditional Louisiana culture.

LSU’s Clint Willson has been selected for a new leadership role to help coordinate the university’s research related to water and coast, which heavily impacts life in Louisiana and other research areas, including energy.

“The questions that come to us from agencies, industry, and communities down the bayou or along the river don’t arrive sorted by discipline. Our answers must come from a combination of experts who know whether a channel will silt in, whether a marsh will hold, or whether an intake will go salty. It often takes a modeler, a sedimentologist, a wetland scientist, a designer, and a Sea Grant agent who knows the parish and the people to provide the best answers, and we have all of them at LSU. My job is to bring them together.”

Jordan Poole is a marine extension agent for Cameron and Calcasieu parishes.

His favorite part of the job? Connecting people with Louisiana's coastal resources through hands-on learning. Fun fact: He's an avid golfer known to sneak a fishing pole onto the course.

The dangers of a hurricane.

How a hurricane is formed: rising warm air from the ocean, storm clouds start forming, storm system starts to spin, storm turns into a hurricane. Hurricane categories (wind strength): minor – 74-95mph, moderate – 96-110mph, major – 111-129mph, severe – 130-156mph, extreme – 157-plush mph. Dangers of a hurricane: strong winds, storm surge, heavy rainfall, flooding, flying debris, power outages. What to prepare before a hurricane: emergency kit, store water and food, secure important documents, know/find evacuation routes.

Over the past five years, seafood specialists from 14 Sea Grant programs, including Louisiana Sea Grant, have teamed up to support the $70 billion U.S. seafood industry, certifying 7,785 professionals in FDA-required HACCP training.

By working across state lines, these specialists have filled critical training gaps, reaching states without a certified specialist and even states without a Sea Grant program at all.

From Gulf shrimp to blue crab, this locally delivered, university-based training helps keep U.S. seafood safe, competitive, and trusted in markets nationwide and abroad.
