End of Watch: Thursday, May 30, 2019

Lieutenant Steven Whitstine was killed in an automobile crash on Port Hudson-Pride Road, between Munson Drive and Pin Oak Lane, in Zachary at about 6:30 am.

He was en route to the sheriff's office when his patrol car left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. He suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. His canine partner suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local veterinarian.

It is believed that Lieutenant Whitstine suffered a medical emergency immediately prior to the crash.

Lieutenant Whitstine had served with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office for eight years and had previously served with the Baker Police Department for nine years. He is survived by his wife and children.

**SWIFT WATER RESCUE***

Around 5:00 this evening, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office responded alongside the Central Fire Department to a water rescue in the 3500 block of Central Thruway.

Two men kayaking in the area struck a tree and were thrown from their kayak into the water. Thankfully, both men were able to make it safely onto a small area of land while awaiting rescue.

Central Fire Department deployed a drone to assist with locating and monitoring the stranded individuals, while EBRSO Air One responded overhead to provide aerial support. EBRSO’s Maritime Response Team, Uniform Patrol deputies, and additional first responders worked together to safely bring both men across the water and to safety. The incident was resolved safely.

“This was an outstanding example of teamwork and coordination between our deputies and our partner agencies,” said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux. “I commend everyone involved for their quick response, professionalism, and dedication to making sure these two individuals were brought to safety.”

The video attached was captured from Air One and shows members of our Maritime Response Team conducting the rescue.

We are thankful for the strong teamwork between agencies and most importantly that both individuals are safe.
